Gatts is the protagonist of berserk. Primarily a dark souled warrior as glimpsed in the very beginning of the series, he was not always so morbid. The series begins by showing off his strength as a youth and his defeat to a young lad of destiny named Griffith. Gatts fights Griffith, leader of the Band of the Hawk , loses and is forced to join Griffith in his quest to own his own kingdom. Throughout these years with the Band of the Hawk, Gatts is happy to enjoy his time with his comrades in arms and feels he has a place to belong. Unfortunately all that changes when he finds out that Griffith does not view him as a friend but an associate working toward elevating his own dream. Griffith says a friend to him is someone with his own dream that is equal to him. So Gatts decides from then on that he will become a friend of Griffith and in order to do that he must leave the Band of the Hawk. So as soon as their last military campaign together ends, Gatts attempts to leave the Band of the Hawk. Unfortunately Griffith will not let him leave without a fight, believing that what is lost by the sword can only be regained by the sword. So Gatts faces off again against Griffith but this time he trounces him and leaves on his own personal quest believing that his leaving would have no affect on Griffith whatsoever. Griffith however is devastated and that same night he enters Princess Charlotte's room and has sex with her only to be seen by a maid that reports him to the palace guard. As Griffith is leaving he is found and captured. Gatts meanwhile is in the countryside trying to find a dream worth fighting for.A year passes and then finally Gatts hears from a man that the Band of the Hawk is a bandit group about to be exterminated. So Gatts sets out to help them. He finds them in a state of disarray being led by Casca. He decides to stay with them until they have recovered Griffith who has been tortured for a year. So they go into rescue Griffith and find out that Griffith is a wasted emaciated version of his old self. Gatts feels despair and hatred toward himself for allowing such tragedy to befall Griffith. He rescues Griffith and on their way back to camp, Griffith takes the reigns of a carriage and rides off into a lake. He is thrown from the saddle and lands in the water breaking his arm. Bleeding and broken, Griffith finds that his old item known as the Egg of the King has returned to him. Some of Griffith's blood gets on the charm and it opens its eyes and a faces forms screaming in agony with both its eyes and Griffiths' as well bleeding. The members of the Band of the Hawk and Griffith are brought into a place called the Eclipse where they meet four demons known as the God Hand. The God Hand tells them that they have come because Griffith is to become their fifth member. So they take Griffith and they try to get him to say that he will sacrifice the Band of the Hawk to become a demon lord. Griffith reflects on the events in his life and realizes that the only person that ever caused him to forget his dream was Gatts and for that he believes that Gatts must die. So he agrees to the sacrifice. The Band of the Hawk is attacked by demons everywhere and all are killed to fuel the creation of the demon prince Griffith. None but Casca and Gatts remain. So Casca is grabbed by several demons and is about to be impaled just as Griffith is reborn. Gatts has been making an awesome accounting of himself by killing dozens of demons and he fights his way towards Casca only to see her brought to Griffith's arms. Griffith proceeds to rape Casca in front of Gatts' eyes. Gatts struggles to reach her but a demon bites his arm and latches on tightly. Gatts begins to cut his own arm off in an attempt to reach Casca while Griffith coldly continues the rape staring into Gatts' eyes. Gatts struggles and struggles but never manages to break free. In the end we find that due to these events Gatts is now searching for Griffith in an effort to kill him and see justice done.

The lead character in the series. A survivor in the truest sense of the word, he has managed to continue living despite horrific misfortunes that have followed him since the day he was born, literally. A solitary mercenary for most of his early adult life, he later joined the Hawks and became its raider commander and is instrumental in bringing Griffith and the Hawks fame and glory.
