Furukawa Sanae is the mother of Furukawa Nagisa, she is the wife of Furukawa Akio, and she runs a bakery together with Akio.
Sanae did not always use to be a baker. Her original occupation had been a teacher (and she continues a private kindergarten playhouse in their home as a second job), but due to certain circumstances, she had to give it up.
Throughout the series, there is a running gag about Sanae's bread being weird and bad tasting (there was once she baked bread with crabs, complete with shells, in another occasion, her bread filling was stuffed with rice crackers).
That said their bakery surprisingly runs well due to their neighbour's continued patronage regardless of the weird tasting bread.
The second level of their bakery also serves as the home for the Furukawa family. Together with Akio, they care for, and nurture with love, the sickly Nagisa.
