Mishima is an ethereal figure who appears at various key junctures and attempts to help Ayato along his path. She tells Ayato that she is the embodiment of the RahXephon, the image of his heart's true desire, but he disbelieves her. For Kuon, Mishima has the appearance of Ayato; she is also visible to Isshiki, as his assistant, despite the fact that he was classified as a 'failed' instrumentalist.

Reika Mishima
attended the same high school as Ayato, and when the city is under attack, Ayato
is guided by Reika to the secret Xephon Temple, where Ayato finds the awakening
RahXephon. Reika is a very enigmatic character, randomly appearing at
times, guiding Ayato to his destiny as the pilot of RahXephon
