As a child, Athrun attended a preparatory school on the moon, where he became good friends with Kira Yamato. Now, with his father leading the most warlike faction of the PLANT Supreme Council and his mother among the casualties of the "Bloody Valentine" tragedy, Athrun is determined to defeat the treacherous Earth Alliance - and shocked to discover that Kira is fighting on the side of the enemy. Athrun has a talent for mechanical tinkering, and has created numerous robot pets for his friends and acquaintances.

Athrun Zala is the childhood friend of Kira Yamato. At the age of 16, he joins the military after the death of his mother in Junius 7. He's assigned to La Crusses' team. Athrun becomes the pilot of the mobile suit AEGIS after stealing it from Heliopolis. He encounters Kira as an enemy in the battlefield and the two friends are forced to finish each other off. His father becomes the new leader of the plants. And Athrun becomes the new team leader. His team members are Nicol Amarfi, Yzak Jule and Dearka Elsman. He is the fiancee of Lacus Clyne. Athrun later meets the princess of Orb Cagalli Yula Attha. After his Aegis gets destroyed, he pilots the new gundam Justice, a mobile suit that has an enjammer canceller.

Athrun Zala (Asuran Zara), is the other main character of the Gundam Seed series. He is the pilot of Aegis Gundam, and later in the series, Justice Gundam. He is a close friend of Kira Yamato, the main character. Being the son of Patrick Zala, the chairman of the ZAFT council, and a soldier of the ZAFT, he is torn between his friendship with Kira and his obligations.

Athrun Zala is the other main character of this brand new series of Gundam anime. The son of Patrick Zala, a general who holds a high post in ZAFT, Athrun pilots the Aegis Gundam, and later the Justice Gundam. He shares a strong friendship bond with Kira Yamato, pilot of Freedom Gundam.
