Amidamaru is a spirit that agreed to help Yôh to become Shaman King by sharing with him the powers that he has as a spirit. Though before he died, (6000 years ago), had killed 3000 men (wich by the way attacked him first) this is why he is known as "The fiend" , he is a kind soul and one of Yôh's dearest friends. He had to stay waiting for Mosuke (his best friend) to come and give him a sword (Harusame), until Yôh went to find Mosuke and Yôh gave Harusame to Amidamaru since Mosuke was dead already and couldn´t do it by himself. That is one of the reasons why Amidamaru helps Yôh.

Once to be a legendary swordman 600 yrs. ago, but today he is Yoh power spirit, a very gentle swordsman, but deadly in a battle!

Most of you are wrong, Amidamaru died 600 years ago after killing 50 of his lords men because he asked him to kill his best friend, Mosuke because he refused he faught the lords men and died fighting. He was supposed to meet Mosuke on Monument Hill and never left until Yoh met Mosuke at the museum and repaired the Sword of Light. After which Amidamaru became Yoh's gaurdian spirit

the fiend amidamaru is the 624(he was 24 at time of death)year old companion and guardian ghost of yoh asakura. called a 'fiend' because he allegedly went nuts and killed many of his fellow samurai. but thats only one side of the story. amidamaru was ordered to kill his best friend, mosuke, by the lord he served. he refused to do it, instead telling mosuke to run away. before he left, mosuke made amidamaru the finest sword ever, harusame, but was killed before he could present it to him. without harusame, amidamaru was eventually overpowered and killed. he was buried in the exact spot he was to meet his friend. 600 years later, he meets shaman yoh asakura who reunites him with his sword and, eventually, with mosuke. amidamaru's oversoul focus is harusame.
