Nyan-Nyan, referred to both in the plural and the singular, is the name given to the spirits that help Taiitsukun at Mt. Taikyoku with various tasks. Though sometimes appearing as a single being, Nyan-Nyan is most commonly seen as multiple beings of the same person, all taking the same form or a cute little girl. While somewhat smart-mouthed and mischevious, Nyan-Nyan is nevertheless an asset for Taiitsukun and the Suzaku Seven.
Miaka and company first encounter Nyan-Nyan on their first trip to Mt. Taikyoku to visit Taiitsukun for guidance on how to return Miaka to the real world. Having barely passed Taiitsukun's test of worth, Taiitsukun let Nyan-Nyan heal Miaka and her friends (one of the Nyan-Nyan even offered to cure Nuriko's perversion, much to his chagrin). Nyan-Nyan's healing and holy powers have come in handy throughout the series, and in later parts of the anime, Nyan-Nyan's ability to provide actual physical bodies for spiritual possession is invaluable. While they do tend to make fun of Taiitsukun at times, they are for the most part respectful servants.
