Echizen Ryoma is Seigaku's only freshman regular. Ryoma is always cool and calm. He's a bit cocky at times but he's able to back up his smack talk with his tennis skills. He's always eager to find ways to break his opponents¡¯ special moves and hopes to defeat his father, Echizen Nanjiroh, one day in tennis. Unfortunately, he seems quite oblivious to anything that does not relate to tennis, like Sakuno's feelings for him.

Echizen Ryoma is a 12 year old tennis player. He was taught tennis since he was able to walk and hold a racket. Since then he had been training hard to beat his father Echizen Nanjiroh(who is a retired tennis pro) at the sport. He enters Seigaku's tennis club and becomes a regular on the first ranking match(a tournament to see who gets to become a regular). He is quickly given the nickname 'ochibi' by one of the regulars, Kikumaru Eiji. He is anti-social and doesn't seem to have any real friends other then the regulars. Since he moved to Japan from America, he is fluent in both Japanese and English.
He respects the captain of the tennis tema, Tezuka Kunimitsu, who wants him to become Seigaku's next pillar of support. Ryoma finds himself finding more cheallengers other then his father as he and the other Seigkau players enter the Kantou tournament, and soon the Nationals.
