I think the voice actor at ADV put it best: This guy is a freak!
The Comic relief character of the series, Yamada takes everything over the top. His emotions run extremely high or extremely low, with nothing in the middle ground. I couldn't decide if he made me want to laugh or cringe at times. He does seem to genuinely think of himself as handsome, heroic, talented and brave, but when push comes to shove, he's none of these things.
He wants to be the center of attention no matter where he is, though particularly around the sisters (naturally) whom he seems to have a crush on both individually and severally. For their part, the sisters seem to find him nearly invisible, impossible though that seems. An alternate theory is that since he proclaims himself Wataru's one and only best friend, they tolerate him for that sake.
The only one who pays him any attention at all is Mami, who seems to enjoy poking fun at him. For some reason she does not seem to gain his attention the way the other 12 sisters do, even the young ones (Eww!) though this changes at the end.

Yamada is one guy who can really over-react to the smallest inconvenence that comes upon him with a slightly pathetic personality. He's also something of a failure in romance and seems to take any chance to spend time with the 12 sisters since he seems attracted to all of them, including the youngest and always has alterimotives for the chores he does for the girls and gets very jealous of his "best friend" Wataru for the attention all of his sisters give him. Mami seems to be the only one of the sisters who's wise to this fact.
Taro is very prone to jealousy against Wataru and also quick to annoyance when he feels, and rightly, that he is being ignored and is overly dramatic when he makes grand exits.
Jeeves likes to pick on him whenever Wataru isn't around by using his girl lust against him.
He seems to have a like/dislike friendship with Mami since she also spies on Wataru alot when she thinks no one is around and treats her a little like a sister of his own. In the final epsiode he sees her again as someone else and instantly falls in love with her, not knowing it's the rough-voiced bully.
