Shouko has been bed-ridden for most of her life from some chronic disease. Although her best friend Maya visits her daily, she is often lonely and wants desperately to go to school and be with everyone else. When she is selected to be a Fafner pilot (despite her poor physical condition, her aptitude for piloting Fafners is pretty good), she feels she finally has the chance to prove herself to everyone (especially to Kazuki, whom she has a very big crush on). Her desperate actions become a major impetus for everyone else's growth.
Shouko lives with her adopted mother Youko and a short-tailed white cat named Kuu. She is the pilot of Mark Zechs (VI).

She has been suffering from a horrible disease for the past couple of years, it makes her body weak and she tires easily. Because of this she does not attend school like all of her friends, she normally stays in bed. Her best friend Toomi Maya visits her everday before she heads off to school to make sure that she does not fell forgotten. It becomes very obvious early on that she has a crush on Kazuki, and it seems that he does know and returns the feeling. Yet they do not see each other very much so they are still friends.
She feels very strongly about what she has to do at all times, she will not let her disease stop her from doing what she feels she has to. It is this determination that led to her death, she sacrificed herself to save the island by taking hold of a Festum and launching her Fafner into the air, where she set the selfdestruction sequence and took it out with her
