Sessho-maru

Go back to character page

age: unknown. Assumed to be over 100 years old, considering that Inuyasha is 66 or 67 and Sesshoumaru is older than him, if you see movie three it shows the day when Inuyasha was born and Sesshoumaru looks the same as he does now. (Watch or read about movie three) pureblooded Youkai live long. Hair: silver with blue or gray highlights, leg joint length. Eyes: amber, red in his youkai form
Appearance: Sesshoumaru is regal, elegant and graceful, even effeminate in facial features. He has pointed ears, long claws on his hands, a midnight blue crescent moon on his forehead, and two magenta scars on each cheek (natural markings). He wears an intricate body armor over a white kimono with an ornate magenta, in manga and red in anime, honeycomb patterns at the left of his collar, and near the ends of his kimono's sleeves. He also has the magenta (manga) or red (anime) at the tips of the sleeves. He also wears baggy white pants cinched at the ankles. A sash of magenta and white goes over the armor at his waist in manga and in anime the sash is blue and golden-yellow. He also carries a huge, silver length of fur over shoulder. There has been much speculation as to what it actually is. Most believe that it is tail, but even I am not sure. In the anime, there are shots of him from the rear, and it is very plain to see that he has no tail in his quite-human form. He also has an Demon form, that of an enormous, dog.
Appellations: Sesshoumaru, Sesshoumaru-sama, Sesshou-maru Meaning of Name: The kanji in his name can be read in a myriad of ways. Some possibilities include "killing purity", "destruction of life", "Destruction of the circle of life" or "Killing Perfectionist". The "maru" kanji in his name can be seen in many Japanese men's first names. Impressions: Sesshoumaru is self-centered, arrogant, aristocratic, very much aware of his noble heritage, cold-hearted, aloof, and merciless. He is also lethally focused, intelligent and observative. You do not want to stand on this guy's wrong side. He is proud of his pure youkai blood, and for this reason condescending -- despising -- of Inuyasha, his half-brother. At first glance he appears completely emotionless, and has no respect whatsoever for humans, whom he thinks to be mortal weaklings, I dont blame him even though I am a mortal, I am extremely cold-hearted, got a problem with it?
History (spoilers!): Sesshoumaru is the older son of the late Inu taishou, Lord of the Western Lands (Sesshoumaru inherited it from his father) and a taiyoukai (great demon). The identity of his mother is unknown, but she had to have been a dog-demon, since Sesshoumaru certainly is a pureblooded dog youkai. It is presumable, although not sure, that Sesshoumaru now reigns over his father's domain. Virtually nothing is known about his personal past, but he did spend a long time searching for his father's grave, where Inu taishou had hidden the magical blade called Tetsusaiga, forged of his own fang, which Sesshoumaru desired. This was how he first ran across Inuyasha after the hanyou had been freed from his enchanted sleep. He found the gateway to the grave, and also the sword, but the shield around the blade repelled him since the sword was meant to be Inu taishou's heirloom to Inuyasha. The brothers did battle and Sesshoumaru fell after Inuyasha had lopped off his arm. He has returned to claim the Tetsusaiga on several occasions. (Anime ep 5-7) He changed his goal after Naraku deceived him (anime ep. 18-19) and when he finally had a sword stronger than the Tetsusaiga, the Toukijin which was made with Goshinki's fangs that was then forged by Kaijinbou, Totosia's old apprentice.
Weapons & Attacks: In battle, Sesshoumaru is death with style. Whether using claw or blade, he is precise, coordinated, and lethal, and never lets anything even remotely like his emotion cloud his judgment. Combined with his youkai endurance and superb speed, these qualities make him an opponent to be feared. The only one to have briefly overcome Sesshoumaru so far has been Naraku, who was planning to merge the youkai lord into his body.
Dokkasou ("Poison Flower Claw"): Sesshoumaru is able to imbue his claws with a greenish, vapory poison that is deadly to humans and incapacitating to youkai.
The Tenseiga ("Heavenly Life Fang"): The Tenseiga is Sesshoumaru's grudgingly carried heirloom sword, left to him by Inu taishou, his father. It is the Tetsusaiga's counterpart, after a fashion, since whereas the Tetsusaiga has the power to destroy a hundred lives with one strike, the Tenseiga can, when fully mastered, save a hundred lives with one swing. In short, the Tenseiga is a healing sword. When wielded by Sesshoumaru, it has the power to restore a (recently) dead creature/person to life by destroying the pallbearers, the goblin-creatures that come to take the dead soul to the afterlife.
The Toukijin (the kanji for the name translate as "fighting fierce god"): Forged from the fang of the oni Goshinki (Narakus third incarnation) by the youkai sword smith Kaijinbou, the Toukijin is Sesshoumaru's other sword of far less benign qualities than the Tenseiga. When completed, the Toukijin possessed Kaijinbou, and only Sesshoumaru proved the blade's worth, suppressing the huge jaki (evil aura) it emitted and thus becoming its master. The limit of the Toukijin's powers is unknown, but it is noteworthy that the fangs it was forged from bit the Tetsusaiga into pieces.
Things of Note: Sesshoumaru has only one arm, since Inuyasha severed his left one. Amine ep.7. He has, on occasion, worn the arms of other creatures as replacements, but despite the regenerative abilities of youkai he seems unable to grow a new arm. As a full-blooded youkai, he can assume several different shapes at will: that of a huge dog (his true form) assumed to be a white Siberian husky, (Only in anime ep. 7) the form he usually wears which can be mistaken for a human from a distance, and then a generally humanoid but much more dangerous shape in which his claws lengthen and his eyes go red. He can also fly, when he does it appears as if he is on a vapor-like cloud.
Love Life: Love? The great Sesshoumaru is definitely above such feeble human emotions! The fact is that he apparently has no love life. But in anime ep. 133 and 134 there was a human who fell in love with him many years ago but her soul was devoured by demons. The demons said that it is the only way to see Sesshoumaru once again. Luckily, Sesshoumaru did not like her and killed her instead of saving her from death, because I dont think he should be with anyone. He only slightly respected her.
