Kikyo

Go back to character page

Kikyo was the priestess of her village, assigned as the sole protector of the Shikon Jewel. And she was quite good at her job. Kikyo was an expert at archery with the bow and arrow. She killed many demons and with it almost effortlessly. One demon she absolutely did not raise a hand to kill though was Inuyasha. She always saw something different and special in him. One day though, something changed...Something went really weird between Kikyo and Inuyasha. That day was 50 years ago. When Inuyasha was sealed to a tree by Kikyo`s arrow and Kikyo was killed by a wound from Inuyasha(though was it Inuyasha? hmm).

Age: she was 17 when she died, but she does not really age any more.
Hair: black, down to her hips. She wears it bound with a white ribbon.
Eyes: grey in the manga, brown in the anime, so it's your pick...
Appearance: Kikyou appears serene to the point of being cold, and her expressions are generally very restrained. She is clad in the traditional garb of a miko (Shinto shrine maiden), a wide, red hakama (skirt-pants) and a white haori (jacket) with black stitching at the cuffs of the sleeves.
Appellations: Kikyou, Kikyou-sama, oneesama, miko-sama
Meaning of Name: "Kikyou" translates to "Chinese bellflower".
Impressions: Kikyou is calm, restrained, focused. She can seem emotionless and withdrawn, but she is quite passionate, she simply does not allow her emotions to the fore. She is obviously quite intelligent, and can be very ruthless. Much about her is wreathed in mystery, and no one seems to be able to discern her agenda -- she keeps her own counsel. When she is able to perform her miko duties, teaching children, tending to the sick and wounded, she is more at ease and even smiles on occasion.
History (spoilers!): Kikyou was the priestess of her village and the sworn guardian of the Shikon no Tama that was entrusted to her care so that she would purify it of its evil. In order to cleanse the jewel, she herself had to remain pure: chaste, and free of any indecent or worldly thoughts. As fate would have it, however, a young half-demon named Inuyasha wandered into Kikyou's village, lured by the jewel. She always chased him off, but never killed him, and slowly a bond began to develop between them as they both were outsiders of a kind -- Inuyasha because of his mixed blood, Kikyou because of her status as a miko and the protector of the jewel. They then fell in love, and it was intended that Inuyasha use the Shikon no Tama to become fully human, after which the jewel would be purified and Kikyou could live her life as a normal woman. However, on the day Kikyou was bringing the jewel, she was suddenly attacked by Inuyasha, who wounded her badly and took the Shikon no Tama. Mortally injured, she chased Inuyasha and pinned him to the Go-Shinboku god tree with an arrow, sealing him into an enchanted sleep. Then she died from her wounds, and the jewel was cremated with her body. But Kikyou's story was hardly over... since it had been not Inuyasha, but the youkai Naraku disguised as Inuyasha who had mauled her and taken the jewel, in order to poison Kikyou's heart and thus defile the Shikon no Tama. Naraku had also attacked Inuyasha the very same day, that time wearing Kikyou's form and thus managing to turn the two on each other while escaping unscathed himself. However, since Kikyou went peacefully to her death, Naraku's objective, the corruption of the jewel, remained ungained.
Weapons & Attacks: Kikyou uses the weapons of a miko, bow and arrows. She is a master archer, and also has command of an extensive array of spiritual powers in spite of her not-quite-living present state, such as blasting purifying energy from her hands, repelling enchantments aimed at her, raising kekkai (barriers) etc. (Begin speculation) It does seem, however, that a significant portion of her abilities were transferred to Kagome, who is her reincarnation and thus of the same soul, or then her present state prevents her from fully using her miko abilities.
Hama no Ya ("Arrow of Purity"): Kikyou, as a miko, is able to charge her arrows with purifying energy that distrupts and blows away youkai and other evil influences.
Things of Note (spoilers!): Technically, Kikyou is dead. She died 50 years ago on the day she sealed Inuyasha and was tricked by Naraku. She was brought back to "life" by a female oni (ogre) named Urasue, who fashioned her a new body and bound her to it by means of her bones and earth from her grave, thinking to have her as a servant. Kikyou proved to have a will of her own and destroyed Urasue, but the once dead miko was left wandering the world of the living. Her body is made of bones and soil, and thus she requires the souls of dead people (shinidama) to nourish her body. To achieve this end, she has several somewhat insectoid servant youkai (Shinidama-chuu) who gather the souls for her.
Love Life: Kikyou loved Inuyasha, and it appears that death has not necessarily severed the emotion. When restored to "life", Kikyou initially hated Inuyasha for betraying her, but she has since learned more about the true course of things. Now that she knows the truth about who killed her she has taken action to prevent him being killed by anyone. And truthfully even though at first she hated him she always loved him and he to her!
First Appearance: manga act 1, anime episode 1
(Japanese voice actor): Hidaka Noriko
(English Voice Actor): Willow Johnson
