Jaken was once a fearsome warlord of an army conprised of his fellow imps and one of the most powerful leader until he encountered Zanragira who was about ot kill him after his army had killed several of her own soilders and was cut in half by Sesshomaru just because she was standing where he wanted to walk. As the dog demon walked past the imp, Jaken realized he wanted to be his retainer and abandoned his followers to become a follower himself and was given the task of being his servant if he could master the Staff of Heads, which has the heads of a human woman and man that belches out flames and is hardly ever seen without it. For whatever reason, Jaken's power has gone down greatly and his devotion for Sesshomaru is somewhere between admiration and fear for his own life since he has been threatened with death twice in the series.
