Ryuuku is the samurai put in charge of protecting Kana, who is rumored to be the last winged being on the planet. **SPOILERS** He and Uraha take Kana and run away in order to bring her to her mother. He and Kana fall in love, and to save his life she is cursed and sent away into the sky, to dream sad dreams until she is rescued by someone. He is the distant ancestor of Kunisaki Yukito. (Kana was sent into the sky 1000 years before the events in AIR take place. It, as it says in the opeing, it is the 1000th summer.)He and Uraha make a child in order for his will to live on, because as part of the curse that sent away Kana, the one she loves will die too. Yukito is his and Uraha's great-great-great-great....grandchild who continues on the search for the winged girl in the sky with only the help of the magic passed down in his puppet from Uraha and his own intuition.
He is extremely loyal to Kama and vows, under her orders, to never die and to never kill another human. Ironically, because of this pledge, he recieves the wound that ultimately brings his own death.
