Momoi Mai

Go back to character page

Momoi Mai (Futakoi Alternative ver.); some spoilers:

Mai was formerly the school doctor and counselor at Hinashi Senior High, the private school that Rentarou once attended, which explains her tendency to wear a white lab coat over a sweater and skirt. Despite being on the faculty, she does not seem to be significantly older than Rentarou.

Like Sara and Soujyu, Mai and Ai have distinct personalities. Mai seems to be the more serious and "older" of the two - I mean older in the figurative sense, in the same way that Sara is "older" than Soujyu. Although she has a healthy sense of humor, she seems to be more visibly affected by her emotionally-charged past. She is kind, smart, and sharp; the way she fends off the suspicious man proves that she takes no nonsense. But due to her memories, she seems to be a fragile ember of what she once was.

Three years before the Futakoi Alternative "present day," when Rentarou was eighteen, he formed a triangle (of ambiguous status) with Mai and Ai. They seemed to get along more as friends than as mentor-to-student. However, due to a falling-out that was likely precipitated by a decision on Ai's part, there has only been awkwardness ever since, and Mai even quit her job because the memories involving Rentarou haunted her to no end.

Nevertheless, she comes to the Futaba Detective Agency one day with a strange request. Whether it is out of residual jealousy or a desire to be with Rentarou or simply an honest suspicion is never fully resolved.

[How to tell the twins apart: Mai wears fuschia/purple glasses while Ai does not. Otherwise, they have identical eyes and hair, and although Mai seems to prefer skirts while Ai is only shown wearing jeans, Ai and Mai do have similar to identical wardrobes.]
