Pen Pen is a hot springs penguin. He loves the mini baths inside his owner's (Misato's) house. Pen Pen is mad cute, and has a bad attitude. He's a "Ghetto Penguin".

Pen-Pen is an Erect-Crested penguin with enhanced intelligence, genetically adapted for warm water activity. He lives with Misato in a specially designed refrigerator complete with a light that stays on when the door is closed. Pen-Pen has a habit of drinking beer with his meals, a predilection that may have been learned from his owner. One always has the feeling that Pen-Pen knows more about the Angels and what's going on than any penguin has the right to know.

A new breed of HotSpring Penguin, Pen^2 (or Pen Pen) is the coolest character of the story. As Misato's best friend, he lived inside her fridge and occasionally mingled with Shinji and Asuka.
He kept to himself most of the time prefering the TV or the icebox to human contact. Misato sacrificed a lot for him to keep him safe and happy, but he appreciated it more than he actually let on.
At the end of the TV Series, the Horakis becomes his guardians when Misato fears for his safety. (Voiced by Megumi Hayashibara)
