Main character of Evangelion. Arrives in the city of Tokyo-3 when he is summoned by his father, who abandoned him 10 years beforehand. After realizing he is the only one who can save humanity, he agrees to pilot Eva Unit-01. Through the series, he has many ups and downs, with more of the latter. Eventually realizes that there is more to life than just piloting Eva.

Ikari Shinji is the third child, chosen to pilot the Eva 01. He is also the only child of NERV's commander, Ikari Gendou. Shinji is terrified of being rejected, he believes that everyone hates him and that he has no reason to exsist. He also believes that he is too weak to die, so he does everything he can for approval and suffers a great deal in the process. Although he is rather weak and timid, Shinji is an amazing character. His voice actor, Ogata Megumi, is incredible in expressing deep, gut-wrenching, pain that can draw tears in one anguished cry. Shinji illustrates the human longing for acceptance on a higher level, his character digs deep into the human phyche and rips out emotions that we may have not wanted to feel. Ikari Shinji is a tormented 14-year-old boy, longing for love and acceptance.

Shinji is for the most part of the time an extremely troubled individual, however, most of his ordeals are worsened, and often even caused, by his severe lack of self confidence. Shinji finds it incredibly hard to express his feelings towards others for the fear of being emotionally hurt, and is all too often unwilling to adapt to new situations.
The fact that Shinji hasn't had the best of relationships with his scheming father, Gendo Ikari, having chosen to run away many years ago, and coupled with the loss of his mother, Yui Ikari, at an early age hasn't made his life any easier to deal with. Yet unfortunately running away from bad situations is one of Shinji's personal traits, one that he must over come in order to lead a less stressful life. Unable, or simply unwilling, to bear the company of his father after living alone in exile for so many years, Shinji chooses instead to accept Misato's invitation to live with her on his arrival to Tokyo-3, something which is a big step for Shinji. Although Misato turns out to be not quite the ideal roommate Shinji had in mind, the bizarre situation he finds himself thrown into does help him to open up a little.

Ikari Shinji is the 3rd child and the pilot of EVA 01. He is somewhat famous becuase he first piloted the EVA with no experiance and defeated an Angel. Throughout the series he shows that he is reluctant to pilot the EVA, and he later learns the only reason he stays with NERV is to here his father praise him. (his father is Commander Ikari)
