If you didn't know better, you might think Sayo is an attractive girl with a skin condition and gray hair, but she's actually a 60-year-old ghost.
In the manga;
Sayo was always depressed that no one could see or hear her and seemed to despise the fact that even without legs she can trip (she has the classic tail-like lowerhalf of a ghost). People finally realize that she exists and almost scare her to a second death until it's revealed she's friendly. She seems to wear the same uniform as most of the students.
In the anime;
She's actually quite cheerful and moves freely about the campus making observations about the other girls to herself and the auidience. In life she had healthy skin and black hair. She died defending a flower arrangement her sister had made. In the anime she wears a sailor fuku. She also takes an interest in Asakura as the girl tries to uncover her past and appreciates her not photographing her when Sayo revealed herself, as when she remembered the cause of her death, she broke down and wept. She and Asakura seem to have become fast friends. Because she's a ghost, she is fairly weak.

No.1 Aisaka Sayo(1925?~1940), is an earthbound spirit that has been in the room that class 2-A now occupies for more than 60 years. Her seat remains empty due to complaints of chill coming from the front-window seat. There is not much known about her other then notions dated from 1940's.
Her lack of talant as a spirit makes it nearly impossible for her to exert her presence and thus she is largely forgotten. Due to her timidness, she spends her night in front of convenience stores or family restaurants.
The combination of all these traits make Sayo fairly lonely, yet she longs to make friend. Will the arrival of Negi Springfield and Sayo's wacky classmates allow the forgotten 80 year old to exist once more?
