As a hero of the first war, he has established himself as one of the best mobile suit pilots in the world. His exploits has gained the respect of all ZAFT and with it celebrity. He has difficulty dealing with his new found fame which is only made worse when he was selected into ZAFT's elite group, FAITH.

Even though Athrun has taken up an important position of protecting Cagalli in ORB at the end of the first war, he still carries a definitive loyalty to PLANT and ultimately decides to return to ZAFT. Because of this, he has unintentionally strained his friendship and alienated himself with his friends and loved ones.
