Despite his age (around Yahiko's), Seta Soujiro is Shishio Makoto's right hand and one of the best swordsmen of the age. Also called Tenken no Soujiro (the genius), he is a master of a lightning-fast fighting style and able to achieve inhuman speed in only a moment, making even Kenshin look sluggish by comparison.
While very young, he was brutally mistreated by his foster family and to avoid even worse treatment, he would hide his emotions and keep smiling all the time. He was intimidated by Shishio (whom he saw by accident) into helping him hide and bringing him food. In return, Shishio gave him a short sword and his "survival of the fittest" views - which Soujiro accepted, since Shishio was the only one to help him when he needed it. Soon afterwards, Soujiro's foster father and brothers suspected that Soujiro might know where Shishio was (Shishio had already got a good bounty on his head), cornered him and tried to kill him, but failed and were killed instead. Soujiro proceeded to kill his foster mother and sister, and went with Shishio.
Among the Juppon Gatana, Soujiro is second only to Shishio Makoto in his fighting skills. His constant good mood and impenetrable smile make him get well with most of the elite fighters - but also feared by almost all, as he is unflinchingly loyal to Shishio. He is the one who most often kills the failed Juppon Gatana, all the same time while talking to them - and the fact he kills them before they realize his intent makes him all the more feared. In combat, it is impossible to judge his emotions, hidden behind the smiling face, and this makes him one of the hardest opponents for Kenshin to fight against. They meet twice - the first time Soujiro covers Shishio's escape to Kyoto, when he breaks Kenshin's original Sakaba, and the second time in Shishio's headquarters as the final test before the Kenshin-gumi.
