Ryuk loves apples because it is an addiction and all Shinigami love apples. He finds Raito's desire for a "Eden" interesting and decides to stay in the human world to enjoy himself and see how things will turn out. It appears he is constantly bugging Raito to accept his offer of Shinigami eyes, which allow humans to see how long other humans have to live and their real names! This makes things much easier because the DEATHNOTE needs a real name and image to kill. Raito refuses because it will cost him half his life and he wants to rule as god longer.Every Death God has only one DEATHNOTE but Ryuk tricked the King of the Death Gods and got TWO, he gave one to Raito(Light) for fun.

Ryuk is but one of the many Shinigamis (Death Gods) in the world. He was the one who dropped the Death Note in the human world. He, too like Raito, finds that his world is very "rotten" and wish for more. After noticing Raito's intention of a perfect world through use of the Death Note, he became intrigued and remain in the human world. His true intention, however, remains a mystery.
