Sanji never knew some leftovers could mean so much to him. In his life living on the sea with cooks, he always ate fresh and clean food, and he never ate any leftovers. That all changed when the Red Foot Pirate Crew attacked the boat, and he drowned into the sea. Red Foot rescued him but from doing so lost his leg, so he couldn't be a pirate anymore(his left leg is what he used to fight). They drifted to an island. Red Foot gave Sanji all the food, which was actually a smaller bag than Red Foot's. Later on Sanji ran out of food and decided to kill Red Foot for his bag, which was never opened. When he cut it open, he saw treasure. Red Foot had given all his food to Sanji. Many days later, a boat rescued them. Red Foot decided to become a cook and own a restaurant on the sea. He kept Sanji as his assistant. Luffy came many years later, now asking Sanji if he could join the pirate crew.

Sanji is originally from North Blue. He was in an accident and nearly drowned, as a pirate named Zeff saved him and lost his leg in the water. They came to a big cliff in the middle of the ocean and were there in about 30 days until they were rescued.
Zeff decided to stop being a pirate and made a resturant, teaching Sanji how to cook so he could work there too.
Sanji was the 4th person to join the Strawhat Pirates. He is crazy about women and who knows what he would do if he saw one naked. O_O
The hair covering his left eye is always covering his left eye. Even in strong winds and in water. No one knows if he even have a left eye. The only times when you have seen it is when his eyes are heart-shaped. It is said to be one of the big OP mysteries.

Actually... he does smoke, at least in the original Japanese anime. For the American version they change a lot of things that may possible be a "bad influence," thus they changed the cigarettes to lollipops and changed guns into weird hammer contraptions.

I noticed alot of you thought Sanji smokes but he doesn't. Its kind of funny what that is. It was a lollipop. I saw it clearly in the second episode he made his appearance in One Piece. In that episode Zef was scolding Sanji lollipop boy when Sanji was beating up on that NAVY captain(who was a customer at the restaurant).
And those images some of you put of Sanji does not seem to be from One Piece. The design of Sanji is slightly different in One Piece.
