Yayoi is a physician, working as the school nurse at Koyomi High School, where she inspires a lot of malingering among the male students. She is also a miko (Shinto shrine maiden), and usually dresses as such away from school. She swings a mean katana.
At home, she insists that Chitose call her "Mama Yayoi" instead of "Sanzein-sensei (Dr. or Ms. Sanzein)".

The school nurse and one of Chitose's live-in mothers. By family tradition, she is a shinto priest who not only sees spirits but converses with them. Should the situation warrant it she will have them excorcised regardless of where or who the unfortunate spirit has inhabited. Her favourite tools for this are the usual charms, holy flame and in desperate cases, her trusty katana. Despite all her eccentricites, she is still cares a great deal for Chitose and will do anything to ensure his physical and spitritual well being.
