I haven't yet watched the anime but, I have played the game.
Note: This is from the first game, but the movie, I beleive, actually starts off on the second game where Elk is introduced.
When Arc first set off, an Arc which sealed a powerful demon was broken. He went to the mountain in order to seal the demon again, but on the way they bumped into each other and fought. Arc was defeated in battle and was almost dead. The demon left him there to die. Then a spirit came to him, and gave him the power of the elemental forces and let him live. Even though he lost, he continued up the mountain to the arc that had contained the spirit, and met Kukuro on the way. They decided to team up and defeat the monster.
