Kazuma Yagami, formerly known as Kazuma Kannagi, was banished from the Kannagi family 4 years ago due to his lack of power. He is currently the only Kannagi family member that wasn't an enjutsushi (Fire elementalist) so his father disowned him and Kazuma banishes himself from Japan. He discovers his abilities as a fuujutsushi (Wind elementalist) during his time away from Japan and returns home on his own accord. He reveals later that he was able to make a contract with the Wind Spirit Lord, Stigma of the Wind. Through this he was able to gain even more power. Fortunately, Kazuma has a stern resolution to protect and doesn't let the power corrupt him.
Kazuma only appears to care for his little brother, Ren, but he gives hints that he really does care for everyone in the Kannagi family and just won't admit it to anyone or to himself. He becomes a bodygaurd to Ayano while she develops her powers and is possibly starting to like her as more than just a friend. (Although they are cousins so it seems a little weird that they would get romantically involved.)
