Summary:
Long ago when Keitaro was only 5 or so, he made a promise with a girl to go to Tokyo U. They believed that they would live happily ever after. He's now 20, he has forgotten everything about the girl except for the promise and because of that, he is still trying to get accepted into Tokyo U. for the third time. At school, his two friends Haitani and Shirai tell him about a girl who's #1 in the nation. After a not-too-pleasant encounter with her, he goes to Hinata Inn.
He gets an uncustomary welcome to say the least, but eventually takes the job of the manager while having the residents believe he's a Tokyo U. student. At first, Keitaro is uneasy with deception, but his aunt Haruka tells him that it's okay. However, one of the residents, Naru, overhears Haruka's and Keitaro's conversation and realizes she's seen him at the prep school and quickly figures out that he's not a Tokyo U. student. But despite this revelation, she helps him keep the secret.

The Hinata's New Resident, Shinobu: Arrow Signs
Summary:
Shinbo's feels like she has no control over and her life is very much like following arrows signs. Shinobu's mom has decided that she and Shinobu will move out and leave Shinobu's father. Despites being unpopular and lonely at school, she doesn't want to leave the city. When she goes out and takes a walk, she encounters Keitaro drawing her and discovers he's a resident of Hinata Inn. She tries to return the book, but it only embarrasses Keitaro.
Meanwhile, the residents at Hinata Inn are in need of a good dinner and head to the restaurant owned by Shinobu's parents, only to find that it's closing. They decide to throw Shinobu a going away party. At the party, they discover that Shinobu's an excellent cook. After some convincing, her parents let her stay at Hinata Inn. Shinobu also realizes this is a new chance at life and starts to make good use of it.

Kendo Girl in Love?: Swordplay
Summary:
Motoko has come back from training camp and encounters Shirai, Haitani, and Keitaro, who have just failed another prep exam. Shirai and Haitani see Motoko and her followers and try to get a date but get beat up by her. However, she gets a strange feeling when seeing Keitaro. When Keitaro returns home, he sees Motoko in the laundry room. When the residents tell Motoko that he's the manager, she stubbornly refuses to accept it.
When Keitaro tries to get to know Motoko, she beats him up again, but she faints upon seeing him. She remembers how her sister was taken away by another man, and ends up figuring that she's in love. And so she's set on getting rid of Keitaro before he can distract her from her training. It turns out that she's just sick, but as a result, she yet again goes after Keitaro for taking advantage of her sickness. In the end, Keitaro saves her from the room, but drops an important item, his student ID.

The Tokyo U. Promise from 15 Years Ago: Diary
Summary:
Keitaro gets caught for lying about being a student at Tokyo U., but Naru covers for him by saying that if he gets in, he would be lying. However, in order to stay, they still make him do his manager duties as well as study for the entrance exam. When he's studying with Naru, she asks him why he's so insistent on Tokyo U. He tells her it's because of a promise. As he is fixing the hole in Naru's floor/his ceiling, he gets a glance at her diary and gets the idea that Naru could be that girl from his past.
Afterwards, she completely ignores him. After the prep exam, Naru did well, but Keitaro thinks he bombed, so he decides to run away. However, all his stuff is still in the building, so he sneaks in and gets his stuff. Naru realizes Keitaro is the person in the burglar outfit. At first, Naru thinks it's best for him to run away, but Haruka makes her remember her situation. So they go look for him, and Naru finds him at Tokyo U. Keitaro now is certain she's the girl from his past.
Back home, Keitaro finds out he made the cutoff for the prep exam.

Wow, A Trip to Kyoto!: Exciting
Summary:
Today is the day that Keitaro makes good of his promise to Naru and to the rest of the Hinata Inn residents as he and Naru head off to take the official Tokyo U. entrance exam. Before he gets to the exam room, he loses his exam ticket, gets chased down by a rampaging van, bumps into a girl named Mutsumi and makes her unconscious, gets the ticket returned to him, and drops all his pencil lead. After the test, Keitaro comes back certain he aced it. Naru isn't so sure she did. In fact, she and Keitaro both failed the test. When Keitaro tries to console her, she makes Keitaro realize she's not the girl from his past that he made a promise to.
After failing the exam, Naru wants to get away. After discovering Naru's not the one, Keitaro wants to leave the area to forget about her. Little do they know the were both going to Kyoto. The residents at Hinata Inn think they're off eloping.
A chance encounter brings Keitaro and Naru together, but not before they break their glasses, so they end up hanging out with each other without even knowing. Although they were surprised at finding out, they both come to the conclusion that they do enjoy each other's company.
