We are hooked. A single anime series has reached indelibley into our lives to enrich our existence with half an hour of cutting wit, deep social commentary and exceptional character portrayal. To watch any episdoe just once on Anime on Demand (the only outlet for it) is totally out of the question. Twice, thrice even 5 times is not enough. Am I going to have to search te internet for the best price just accquire this series?

Together we...

agree it is a phenomenon that should it ever reach american mainstream television it could shape the next generation in much the same way Walt Disney or Star Trek did with ours.

Azumanga Daioh.

I would like to truly reach out to the creaters of this show and rip the intestines from their bodies and tie them up with the same as I drag them behind my truck into the desolation of Pinto Basin and leave them there for the coyotes only the coyotes don't go there.

gawd I love it, totally hooked. What's wrong with me I'm an irresponsible adult. What is it? Yukari, Nyomi, Osaka or maybe Chiyu Chan?

Ayumu (Osaka) talking in her soft georgia accent about hemorrhoids. Not what they are but how to spell it.

"Ahh looked it up in the diiicition nary.... and you know how we spell it with a shi that's dotted but it's not really a shi that's dotted but a dotted shi".

Definitely a space cadet, a few bricks sort of a full load, many sandwichs missing from the picnic basket.

Why?

Come dear, lets go to the Alamo and antagonize a biker or two. You'll feel better.

After reading that, is it wrong to admit that Osaka is my favorite character in Azumanga Daioh? Very Happy

edit: I believe the "not the sharpest tool in the shed" metaphor can also be used here.

Osaka is classic. She is one of the cornerstones of AD for sure. Her witty, acicdental humour is just priceless.

Osaka: 'Y'know, if this was a TV drama, people would start dying right now, wouldn't they?'
Yomi: 'Yeah, true'
Osaka: One by one, people would be knocked off. And the killer is...ME!
Yomi: How'd you become the killer?!

Interesting tale. Hope the antagonising goes well. Just don't pick on bikes with weapons. Smile And if trouble ensues, hopefully Rin's infamous sailor-style school uniform outfit will deter them from doing anything stupid.

For me, the title of this thread says it all:

We have found culture and meaning in anime.

BTW, if you watch Azu in it's original Japanese dialogue, you'd really get smacked by Osaka's funny accent. The way she speaks, it literaly blows me off my feet. I'm another of her obsessed, die-hard fans. I absolutely love her.

Her famous remark: Reverse homerun....

God, I always remember that.

I take it some of you guys saw it dubbed. Osaka speaking in southern accent just sounds so...wrong. My favorite Osaka musing(from the subbed version):

Osaka: "I think that when Christmas time comes..."
Chiyo: "Yes?"
Osaka: "There's a red-nosed reindeer. That's mean."
Osaka: " 'Your shining nose is useful in the fog...' The way he says it doesn't help at all."
Osaka: "If you tell a bald man his head is useful in the dark, you'd get punched in the face. Santa Claus says such cruel things."
Chiyo: "...."

That dialogue is pure gold.

This is solely about Azumanga Daioh, right? Moving it to the proper section.

Osaka's the most popular character on the show (Osakans are used for comedic relief in anime like rednecks are in ours), but I guess I like Chiyo-Chan best. Chiyo-Chan in the penguin suit is kawaii-vana. Oh my God, I feel a head rush to my head!!

This show is the next Love Hina. It will never go away.

I saw 2 minutes of the dub and I wanted to destroy the TV playing it. I had to think very happy thoughts to stray away from that action.

Frankly, an AD is wrong full stop. It's a Japanese-style parody, which includes the accents as well! So why would you change them?

Oh no, Ranger's right. To us the soft spoken southern accent always protrays someone who is either not all theah' or Daydday's mayed a lot of money in tobbaca'. She is a space cadet and certainly the accent fits her perfectly. Ayumu's gems are priceless. Chiyu chan would be next...

Poor Chiyus' body laying face down on the floor.

and it's...

And tha' killah is me.

I do love Chiyu chan. It's perfect that Jessica Boone (Misaki, Angelic layer) is her voice. So innocent, "Not the Yukari mobile" white as a ghost.

This is much much better than South Park, which is not really allowed here, as they keep you laughing without having to make use of a piece of ...

Azumanga is purer than South Park, but South Park is made to be offensive and push the limits. That's the whole point of it. You can have humor without swearing, and pushing the limits of what should and shouldnt be discussed on TV, but .. LoL oh wait.. Rin.. I forgot you hate cursing and all that..

Nevermind..

It's "basically" correct for an American audience (the ADV manga uses Italian-American "How uuu doin'" dialect . . . which is awful.) Other Japanese (i.e. Tokyo-ans) view Osakans the way we Yanks view Southerners and Aussies (i.e. Crocodile Dundee), kinda charming in a way "they're not sophisticated people" sort of way.

Abenobashi nails it better IMO. Of course, Azumanga's humor is VERY specific to Japanese culture, and so it's almost impossible to translate the meaning properly without lengthy notes.

You cannot forget Tomo-chan, this series wouödn't be the same without her. Especially dialoge between Tomo and Yomi, it strikes gold every time Wink

Tomo: Shisuke!
Yomi: Hmm?
Tomo: Shisuke!
Tomo: Shisuke!
Tomo: Shisuke!
Tomo: Shisuke!
Yomi: Shut up allready!

(The way she says it makes it sound like penis in japanese)

Ah and Yukari, and everyone else, this series wouldn't be the same if anyone was removed from it. Even Kimura has a special place in my heart ^^

Okay, I'm laughing out loud from reading this thread... The Yukari-mobile... Priceless. Laughing

Favorite quotes regarding the Yukari mobile:

Chiyo: "But I'm no good at Rock Paper Scissors!"

Nyamo: "The fewer dead, the better."

Okay, I'm cracking up at my desk!

And yeah, Yomi makes great straight-lines for Tomo. Though the "Shut up already" bits were really good, too.

"... Okinawa Okinawa Okinawa Okinawa ..."

"Shut up already"

For Osaka, the subtitles read "Win-from-behind homerun" -- I think "Reverse homerun" might have been better, but it was still funny. Often when watchign Osaka, I get the little mantra running through my head... "Deer... Headlights..."

Really, Osaka is on my top 3 list of fav characters. I'm so sad I have no friends like her:D

Yeah, I don't know that I'd have liked Osaka as my friend, but as someone else's friend she's really funny.

My friend Masahiko (No relation to our esteemed mod) can be like that sometimes, and people get really annoyed with him. Well he's also good with the puns, and my friend Mike (Also no relation) and I often get into "Pun Wars" with him (and each other) until somebody's brain hurts too much to continue. Smile

The character of Osaka makes me laugh, which is good, but knowing someone like that IRL... I'm not sure.

I usually have Azumanga Daioh playing when I need to sit down in front of the TV and get some paperwork done. It's good, even if you only hear it and not watch it.

I've seen it countless times, and it's still funny as ever.
