The Manga Recommendation Thread Suggestions. Questions, Discussion This is the twin of the Anime Discussion thread for recommendations except it's a manga version. The Anime thread is Located here.
This thread is to discuss recommendations for manga to read, and give opinions.. Just like the Anime recommendation discussion thread.
So to start this off Actually I'm going to tell you all about an issue I have.
I got a gift certificate (becase we won a contest and had good sales figures over christmas) from my place of employment. I get to spend $75 in the store on anything I want. (I could also probably go to Sam Goody and buy something too) Anyway..
Since I have like all the Anime I could want and I've seen all the stuff we have in the store (basically) I wan't to pick up some manga..
Our discount is pretty sweet too.. I get 35% off of cover prices.. So $9.99 Manga becomes something like $6.49 .. and I can use my discount on the certificate..
We dont carry a VAST selection, and I've got a TON on my computer already, but we do have thses that I'm interested in:
XXXHolic
Tsubasa
Angel Sanctuary
Hellsing
Psychic Academy
Mahou Sensei Negima
Get Backers
Those I'm interested in.. I've read some of XXXHolic.. I thought it was interesting but scarlet said she just read through volume 3 and there is no story.. I have Angel Sanctuary on my computer & Helsing & Psychic Academy and some of Negima..
I was basically looking for opinions on these manga. Then again.. We're also reserving Elfen Lied Box set.. for $29.99 with my discount I can grab it for $25.99 I dont know how much of a deal that is though, but I really loved the series.. Oh and the Fumoffu series is coming to .. Both are comin in may and both we have box sets for.. So those are options too.. When you have free money to spend its so confusing.. You just dont know what to buy.. I really do want to own the DVDs to every series on my computer someday.. I could also grab those who hunt elves.. Ok .. Its like 5 am and I'm TOTALLY sleep deprived so i'm rambling you see.. LoL this is about MANGA not anime!
God what am I thinking..
Ok.. So about the MANGA LoL What are your opinions? How would you spend my money?
I only have a limited selection so if you say "Cadd get this" and we dont carry it then I cant get it..

In this list, I have read “Negima” and “Tsubasa”. I don’t why, but I don’t read Tsubasa recently, although I read “Weekly Shonen Magazine” in which both manga are running. The story of Tsubasa itself is well made, but I don’t like CLAMP works very much.
If you think “Love Hina” interesting, you’ll like “Negima”.

Caddberry, out of your wish list I have not read anothing but Negima and Psychic Academy.
Negima is a harem anime.. hardcore one. It's magical / harem I suppose. I only have read vol 1 and I would have to say that it's not bad. But I wouldn't say it's good too.. (Author : Ken Akamatsu)
Current rating on enjoyment : 5.0
Psychic Academy (author : Katsu Aki) has good animation.. I love one of his works called "Princess".. (albeit paedophiliac, I love it.. maybe there is something seriously wrong with my taste ) Psychic the manga is much better than the anime (which I gave up watching after 4 Ep coz it's ridiculously subpar) But still even the manga is quite entertaining, I would not say it's good.. After vol. 4 there are too much fanservice and the plot is so repetitive.. and man those girls' boobs are way too big..
Current rating on enjoyment : 5.0 (would have been 4.5 if not because of the fanservice)
So, I think both are very average series plagued with fanservice all over the place.
Just my 2 cents..

Angel Sanctuary is very good if you like stories about angels and demons that is There is also the subject matter, although there aren't many stories about incest, this isn't too heavy on that side of it.
The characters are all very interesting and the artwork is stunning.
The anime version of Angel Sanctuary is a bit like X the movie - very condensed

I bought first two volumes of xxxHOLIC, and write the review.
Here you go.
-------------------------------
Design 7
Story 8:
Character 8
Value 7
Enjoyment: 8
Overall Review
When I read first few episodes, I felt like reading an old manga. The pictures were drawn only by black, and grey color wasn’t used. The black and white contrast suited its mysterious story very well. However this style was used by old horror manga. Also, the setting that the main character is the owner of an antique shop (it’s not antique shop, but it looks like) is a traditional one.
In a word, this manga is “Twilight Zone”, an old US TV series. (“Outer Zone” is more resemble, but you might not know the manga). The book consists of several episodes, and each episode has two(?) chapters. In each episode, mysterious things happen. These stories are quite amusing. Above all, I like the story with a catastrophic end of the first volume.
And I have to mention, this manga loosely (?) links to “Tsubasa”.
---------------------------
For me,
Negima > xxxHOLIC > Tsubasa

I have only read Tsubasa out of your list, and would rate it at about average. It does have references to some other manga done by CLAMP and does also have references to xxxHOLIC like Masahiko said.

Hmm.. Well my coupon doesnt expire for like a year.. So maybe I'll just save it .. I honestly dont know what to blow it on.. Store full of goodies, but most of them I download and I dont know if they are actually good enough for me to own because I havent read any of them yet.. I guess I'll start reading and see what I want to add to my collection.. I would actually LOVE it if our store carried the Ah My Goddess Mangas..

I'm not so heavily into manga. I haven't read any of the titles there. But I do have the Angel Santuary anime (which is supposed to be based on the Assaya chapter or something). Was so-so, but I don't know how well this translates to the manga being good or bad.
XXXHolic sounds like it's hentai. That I'd want to see.

Negima is ok, but it's very good. It is cute and it is weird, but not enough. It's a original idea(to some point), but not one of the great work. The main character is clumsy and does many things wrong, as to be to much expected so it takes some fun away. But it is very cute and takes some fun turns.
Hellsing is a very good manga. It's violent and has a good story. And the manga writer always has like a little "break" from the manga. Like in the end of the book he talks about wanting to marry a Gundam(something similar), and he appologises for how long it made him to give out book 2.
So I would recomend Hellsing, but if you don't like the more violent type Negima is more like it.
(I could tell what the story is)
--------------
My question:
I was reading the manga Mantis Woman and it was kinda creepy, but still very enjoyable. And how many of you have read it, and can you suggest mangas that are in the same category?

Has anyone read the following?
Bambi by Park Young Ha
Missing White Dragon by Park Young Ha
Animal Paradise by Yu Sue Mi
I can only afford to get one NEW manga title this month (as I'm still continuing with my current manga new releases) and I like the sound of all 3 of these but just can't decide on which one to go for

Sorry I can't help you much there since the English versions will be coming out this week from Infinity Studios and I haven't read any of the other translated ones.

Tsubasa
Angel Sanctuary

XXXHolic:- is rather unique, I don't really follow it but I did read the first 2 volumes of the book. It is interesting gothic manner with a "cowboy Bebop" style of story telling, in other words a episodic story. I like the design of the main witch though, she is very unique.
Tsubasa: - Take the 2 protangonist of Sakura Cardcaptors and give it a spin off with a cast of other Clamp characters as side kicks and add a multidimentional love/adventure/comdey story traversing other CLamp stories in the process etc and you have Tsubasa.
Mahou Sensei Negima: - Harry Pot Smoker Harem style with Love Hina elements and a different story line and you have this. Not a bad read, lots of echi moments and a fair amount of fanservice.
Psychic Academy: - I heard from a review that is was ok, not bad. 3/5 I think they gave it.

There are tons of those types of manga here. But the cheap ones are translated into Chinese so unless you can read Chinese, they're really useless.
As far as I know, there are more manga titles here in Chinese than there are English-translated ones (such as those from VIZ or Darkhorse or whatever). And they are pretty cheap, but their format is kinda weird. They're these small sized, and quite thick paperbacks. Not the almost A4-sized English-translated manga size. Waxbound vs stapled together. As to whether the artwork is reversed (mirror image), I'm not very sure.
Lots of places here sell them. These shops can be found in most major shopping centers. Kinokuniya sells them, as well as the original Japanese ones. Prices don't vary much (in fact, as far as I know, they don't) but sometimes there are posted 10% discounts for certain titles.

I have just bought volumes 1-6 of Alice 19th by Yuu Watase. I have read and watched Fushigi Yuugi and Ceres: Celestial Legend and I'm waiting for volume 5 of Imadoki to arrive!
What I was wondering is does anyone know of any other manga titles by Yuu Watase that have been translated? or otherwise

Hana Kimi is a bit difficult to get used to at first because the plot is very unrealistic. The main girl goes into a boys only boarding school and pretending to be a guy and some guys really fall in love with her (while thinking that she is a he) .. at first I really disgusted it and I thought it's really gay .. but after more and more then I settled down and started to enjoy.
It's not a masterpiece like everyone said my dear sister .. but it's not a series which you'll regret that you read it.
*****
If you love Fushigi Yugi so much , I have a recommendation which i am sure you will love to death.
From Far Away (Kanata kara) author : Kyoko Hikawa
I love this series so much.. It's very similar to Fushigi.. but with more action, little comedy, and very very touching romance.
And, if you love Duck Prince by Ai Morinaga (in which it's my least favorite work of this amazingly interesting manga author) check out 2 more series of her works
Yamada Taro Monogatari
Your and my secret XXX
It's so funny you'll laugh until breathless ..

Alice 19th , Zettai kareshi
However they both are very mediocre so I don't really recommend .. Alice 19th after vol 4 onwards are so sappy I can't even tolerate.. just skipped the whole thing and read the ending.. which is a lame happy ending..
Zettai Kareshi i read vol.1 .. not that interesting .. I don't really recommend..

@Charn: thanks! I ended up buying Hana Kimi anyway! and after volume one, I was hooked and I've bought volumes 2, 3 & 4 as well
I've read all of Alice 19th and I love it, it is one of my current favourite manga and it would be wonderful to see it animated - yeah right I like lame happy endings!!
Zettai Kareshi is on my to get list (I think it's released this month? I have to wait for the anime company I buy from to get the stuff in stock from USA).
I am reading Your and my Secret and loving it, I just ordered volume 2, it took a long time to get released!! The other I will look into.
From Far Away is one I keep thinking about getting but just can't make up my mind about it. What is the artwork like inside the book? I like pretty manga

Yes, Manga is presented in different format in different countries.
Most of the Asian ones that I have seen are pretty much novel like in appearance, which makes sense. Because 1. it's smaller so you can pack it in a bag and it stacks so neatly 2. you can read it one handed so you can hold on to the handle bars in trains and buses 3. the intention is to treat them more novel like than western countries.
Of course, a lot of them don't follow this rule.
Some mangas are lucky because they get picked up by a good publisher, so they get to be printed in giant formats, and better papers.
Some mangas are started in house - therefore already have good support team.
Enough blabbering about formats.
I am currently reading -
Birth,
Suikoden 3,
Kindaichi's case files,
Clinical Psychologist,
XXXHolic(for some reason the English translation is more interesting than Chinese ones),
Vampire Master,
Detective Acadamy Q,
And some others that I can't recall off the top of my head.
There are quite a few others that I want to finish or get a hold of the whole series, but that's hard considering my limited space here.
Any good recommendations for an interesting series?

It's gonna get better .. vol. 1-3 IMHO is the worst of the bunch .. no doubt.
Quote: I've read all of Alice 19th and I love it, it is one of my current favourite manga and it would be wonderful to see it animated - yeah right I like lame happy endings!!
That means your tolerance of shoujo is 10 times more than mine. Well I'm not surprised , coz you are a woman ! I can't tolerate Alice 19th after vol 3 ..
Quote: Zettai Kareshi is on my to get list (I think it's released this month? I have to wait for the anime company I buy from to get the stuff in stock from USA).
IMHO, Zettai is like the female version of Chobits .. If that explains anything .. The robot this time is a male .. I found it better than Chobits, but still it's not the standard in which I can wholeheartedly recommend. (I am a perfectionist LOL)
Quote: I am reading Your and my Secret and loving it, I just ordered volume 2, it took a long time to get released!! The other I will look into.
I am waiting for vol 2 too ! vol 1 is too funny to be true. Yamada Taro is very similar in terms of sarcasm and satiric jokes. (Ai Morinaga is an awesome satiric comedy manga author)
Quote: From Far Away is one I keep thinking about getting but just can't make up my mind about it. What is the artwork like inside the book? I like pretty manga
Kyoko Hikawa is one of the 'teachers' of Japanese manga authors. If I rate Yuu Watase's drawings 9/10, then kyoko Hikawa's standard is about 8/10.
There are a few Kanata Kara fansite on the net. And there is also Kanata Kara's e mail address site as well.. If you wanna know how the main male lead looks like, do some search. But I am very very sure Kanata Kara will impress you. It did impress me. (And you know that i am 10 times harder to please than you LOL)

@Charn: Thanks! I will do the search for the characters!
I do have a high thresh hold for shoujo, the cornier the romance, the better! I mean Fushigi Yuugi is my number one romance of all time I am currently reading Kare First Love which is another cute romance - gorgeous guy/geeky girl - just my cup of tea and it's not overly sweet, so you might enjoy that one yourself?!
Edit: I searched!! I must admit some of the artwork is very nice, reminds me of Orange Road and Sailor Moon in some ways. I guess that's because of the age of the manga (1992).

Ummm.... do you mean the anime, because you said episode?
If so this is not the correct topic.
You might want to check out the Love Hina and One Piece forums for further discussion. If you go to the anime discussion folder, you'll be able to go to the different forums for specific anime.

Hmmmmm.... well that depends on your tastes. I see you like Love Hina, but do you like anything else? If I were you I'd buy manga that isn't an anime, that way you won't be getting the same story twice, you know? I buy manga that aren't anime that way I get more stories and such. Like Berserk, the anime is only about 1/3 of the actual current story length, to get the rest you have to read the manga.
I wouldn't buy a manga where you already know what's happening. Get something new and exciting.

Apparantly, the manga is A LOT better than the anime. If you liked the anime, you'll love the manga. If you loved the anime, you'll probably... I don't know.... ditch your girlfriend for the manga?
Skip the Ai Yori Aoshi manga though. I hear that it's not as good as the anime. That's the reason why I didn't buy it, even though I loved the anime.

well i like anime like
Ai Yori Aoshi
I my Me Stawberry Eggs ( i loved this anime but found the ending unsatifying, is there a manga for this)
Sister Princess
Hanukyo Maids
and basically all your harem animes. The reason i'm looking for manga is to find more romance material and to compare the differences between the manga and anime. I always see ppl posting that manga's go into more detail than anime.

Well of course. Just like Books are more detailed than movies... you think the LOTR movie had even half of what the books contained??? But yea, if you are a big fan of a series I would say get the manga because it will fill you in on a lot of things. Like I really liked Samurai Deeper Kyo, so I got the manga because the story is much richer in the mangas....

Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances). The manga is so much better than the anime

What I was wondering is does anyone know of any other manga titles by Yuu Watase that have been translated? or otherwise
Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden. Have you got Zettai Karashi yet? I've read all of Zettai Karashi already, its a bit stupid but if you like chobits, you won't mind this. Chobits is even stupider than this.
Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden is the genbu part of it and i think it has potential to be better than Fushigi Yuugi. But only 3 volumes are out so far so its a bit early to say.
You mean translated into english? I don't know whether the Genbu Kaiden is translated yet. I got mine in chinese.
Are you an avid fan of Yuu Watase or something? You seem to have most of her works. (as do i coz i am a fan of yuu watase ) I haven't heard of Imakido though. I have read Alice 19th, Zettai Karashi, Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres and the Genbu Kaiden. And i loved them all... Although Zettai Karashi wasn't really that great.

Zettai Kareshi has come out all its volume??? I thought it's only up to volume 3 unless you were refering to the chinese translated version.

If i'm not mistaken, some readers mention that genbu kaiden isn't as good as the fushigi yuugi... then again maybe it's preference

Genbu Kaiden is translated in English though but that is our local publisher not sure about the US though.

Imadoki is not yet translated in our local scene but it has been translated in the US and it's completed some more...and i'll be buying them soon!! once i got time to go down again to the shop. If i become a member i get to buy manga at 10 % off...and if i pre-order i got 20 % off... definitely worth it...
From what i hear is that as Yuu Watase get more and more busy and more and more famous...her storyline seems to be dropping...which may be why Zettai Kareshi isn't that great as compare to the rest of her works...but then this will be one my favourites as one of the guy character wear spectacles!! how many times can you find an anime guy character who wears spectacles and isn't the bad guy!!!

Of course i was reffering to the chinese version. I only get the chinese version unless i can't help it.

I think that the people in the genbu kaiden have more interesting powers, besides, i think the art improved too.

I know, i get the chuangyi online news letter i know whenever anything new comes out. Its very useful.

What shop is that? Can get so much discount.. You like just because that guy (whatever his name is in english) wears spectacles?? That's odd...

Thanks for the info, but my original post is pretty old now and I've done lots of research into her works and found that none of her early stuff has been translated into English, so I made do with buying Japanese copies of the early works and then finding the translations online (Ms. Watase has her own website with translations for English speaking fans ).
I am a BIG fan of her work, she's my favourite manga-ka of all time
I can't wait for the Priestess of Genbu's story to finally be released in English (volume 1 is due out next month in US and I'm importing it!), Zettai Karashi is only being released in Shoujo Beat, the new manga magazine from VizMedia, so unless I can find a copy somewhere, I will have to wait for ages for someone to finally publish a graphic novel version!
Imadoki is lovely. It's her only story set in a high school and it was really sweet but unusually short for her, as it only covered 4 1/2 volumes!

The end of volume 5 of Imadoki was a short story, completed unconnected with the original.
I'll PM you the address to her own site, it's really lovely

You've got to tell me that site, i don't really like manga in english but I don't think i've seen her earlier works in Chuang Yi. They are only the ones from Taiwan which are so expensive. Although i can get discounts from my manga rental store which specially orders from Taiwan but is sold at a cheaper price. That's SGD$1.50 difference as compared to my usual manga store. But it's still SGD$100 plus to buy the whole set of Fushigi Yuugi. So i decided to rent it along with Ayashi no Ceres.
Wow, that's really slow. The Genbu Kaiden out to volume 3 here in Singapore. And Zettai Karashi 6 (the last book) was out long ago here. It must be a pain to have to wait so long for your manga... I already find it bad enough when i have to wait for translations then for Chuang Yi to publish.
I believe Zettai Karashi's also set in high school.

Is Sunshine Plaza in the west or something? I seriously never heard of it before. Even my mum hasn't heard of it before. I live in the east and i have absolutely no idea what's in the west.
I suffer from myopia too. I can't see a damn thing without my spectacles.
The other half is probably another short story. Zettai Karashi was 5 1/2 volumes too. There were two stupid short stories at the end of volume 6. They were really, really stupid. Alice 19th was 6 1/2 volumes with another short story behind volume 7.

Last friday, when Ken and I went there, i managed to look for landmark... Nanyang Academy of FIne Arts (NAFA) is just beside...want a more known landmark... It's 5 min 3 min walk from Hotel Rendevous which basically means it is in Orchard Road.

if you read one manga this summer, read BLEACH!
The anime is good, but the Manga just provides a deeper story line.

What's bleach about? I've never read or watched it before. By the way, if you want to reccomand manga to people, this is the thread for it. http://www.animenfo.com/forums//viewtopic.php?t=1488
