Kenshin's Fate (spoilers) so.. i was talking with a friend of mine and she pointed out that she thought Kenshin had a STD, maybe syphillis, which for some reason feels like a really common disease in those times to me.
Anyway, her argument was that she wasn't sure what the sickness was. She first thought (like I did) that it was all the battle scars from all his fights and his body couldn't take it. Then Kaoru said that he wanted to feel Kenshin's pain. Then they have sex (implied). Then Kaoru has the same sickness too... meaning = STD?

And how'd he get it in the first place? I didn't know he was the promiscuous type.

The first wife of course.
She probably got it from her late husband , who probably frequented the red light districts. After all, wasn't that where kenshin killed him?

No. Definitely not. His first wife was never previously married. She and the boyfriend were planning on getting married but he was killed by Kenshin. As for red light district, maybe that was where he was killed but he was on patrol duty at the time. Was he a member of the Shinsen Gumi? I can't remember this detail, but he was definitely in service to the Shogunate and part of some group tasked with defending Kyoto.

Well... Kenshin had to have gotten it from somewhere. There aren't that many females in this anime. There's the doctor... Kaoru (not her)... some Chinese girl that Kenshin did while he was in China? And the first wife...
maybe you're right ... and maybe he contracted it from some Chinese girl
its so odd... this ending isn't the same as the manga right? they lived happily in the manga... i think.
or is ther some other way to get syphilis

Nah, STD is STD. Sexually Transmitted. Well, they didn't have blood transfusions back then so...
Anyway, in the manga, (assuming there is only 1 version of the manga)
Quote: It ended in a scene with Kenshin and Kaoru living together as husband and wife. They also had a son aged ?3? I can't tell ages of anime and manga characters. Additionally, it turns out his small body was unable to sustain the rigours of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. So he had to put away his sword forever.

I'd say it's definitely not an STD.. The thought makes me laugh..
It was just a comunicable disease I'd imagine. Probably transferable by bodily fluids.. Not necessarily just through sex..
However, if it was.. Well... I am wondering why the kid came out ok..
I suppose its possible to come out fine without the disease.. Perhaps Kaoru didn't catch it right away..
I didnt read the manga..

the description you have, cadd, is what an STD is...
there isn't really that much transferable by just saliva. even AIDs is difficult to transfer by saliva
how else can you transfer bodily fluids?

Through saliva you can't transfer aids, but you can through blood.. Open sores in or on your mouth for example..
There are other ways, but it depends on the disease in question.
I don't know how communicable the disease was because we don't know what it was.. Therefore, everything is just guesswork honestly.

There are two ways to look at Kenshin's disease in the OVA.
1. It was a manifestation of his internal guilt. Ever since he became a hitokiri, Kenshin suffered from this massive guilt which is the reason his scar would never heal. The reason he never showed those symptoms was carrying the Sakabatou allowed him to stave it off by helping people, allaying the feelings somewhat.
After giving up the Sakabatou, Kenshin can no longer protect people, so the guilt returns tenfold. This time it manifests itself not only through the cruciform scar but also through sores all over his body, slowly killing him. Eventually the guilt is so bad that his mind simply locks that part of his life out, which is why by the time Sano finds him in China in 1894, he can longer remember anything.
2. It is syphilis. Syphilis while considered an STD can be transmitted through the contact of bodily fluids. In the 19th century, sanitation wasn't a top priority as it is now. People often came in casual contact with each other's bodily fluids and thought nothing of it, which is why diseases were so rampant.
As a swordsman, Kenshin both inflicted and received bloody wounds. The swords that cut through his flesh would have dried up blood, germs and bacteria on their blades. When these things were introduced into his bloodstream, he could quite conceivably have picked up syphilis.
One of the symptoms of syphilis is the loss of one's memories, which of course Kenshin suffers from at the end of the OVA. This is why I'd support syphilis if not a manifestation of his guilt.

I always thought (and if not, it should be) that it is OK to do thread-revivals in anime-discussion topics. After all, animes don't change over time so the discussion is always valid. It isn't spam because it isn't necessarily a post count+1 thing.
Also, if you add something helpful, then people in the future 1 year from now can see it and read it and discuss it.

Yes it is. i forgot to add the rest of my post which was about how it was a valid post since he didn't make a useless post. However, this was the second time he posted in a dead thread. If he didn't know that those threads were a bit old, he does now.
And if he's replying to someone who doesn't even visit the boards, as does happen on many an occassion, that would be silly, now wouldn't it. Tis better to be remindful than let people just waste their time explaining something to nobody.

Well I should say now it's 2009 and I just happened to be browsing info on this subject and found this old thread very interesting. I don't think there's anything wrong or silly with keeping the flow of information going as long as there's no change in the facts. And even if the person we reply to doesn't come back to the thread, someone else who finds this discussion may benefit from the additional info.
So here's my belated contribution, in case in some distant future someone wanders in here as I did xD : the first thing I thought of when I saw those chest marks on Kenshin and Kaoru was tuberculosis. It was a wide spread disease in the 19th century and it was contagious. Also, we know Kenshin's body had become weakened and frail. (Though syphilis is also a good hypothesis.)
