 Why is DBZ so popular?

Seems like i hear about DBZ alot and yet when i watch it i hate it! there are so many sequels and movies, and cartoon network is always showing and endless supply of new episodes. the characters are shallow, the fight scenes are repetitive and borring, and there is no original plot. atleast thats my opinion, someone prove me wrong cause i promise not complainin, im lookin for an explaination ^^

remeber the saga with frezza? or how ever you spell it.. anyways.. it took 5eps just for goku to power up then it took 10 more to beat him when it was supped to be 8eps total!! >.<

Why is DBZ so popular? 2 reasons:

1) Merchandising oppurtunities, a ludicrous amount of commercial tie ins properly funded will usually guarentee a series' success because money talks.

2) some ppl are just weird Confused

One of the simplest reasons I can think of is that people don't care for originality or story line. They just want to see things die.
Also there are people who like anime and think that all anime is like that and don't know what they're missing out on

I moved this topic to the dragon ball z section. In the future try to post things that have to do with a particular series on their board.

DBZ was really popular back in the day because really it was the only thing around here.. There was other stuff, but it was also mostly kids that were in to it.. kids dont care about plot or depth.. It was repetitive and it worked.. Personally, I hate it, but i hated the crappy dub i watched on cartoon netowrk.. maybe if i saw it in its original form i would have atleast given it a chance..

even though most ppl(including me) hate DBZ there are some parts some ppl(including me) like. for example i liked vageta(sp). to tell ya the truth i loved the show when i first saw it. then when i saw better anime i hated it.

so basically:
-ppl love it cuz that's the only anime they have seen
-that's the first anime they have seen
    -have bad taste

I'm not so sure the producers of DBZ were ever looking to make a good anime. I think they just wanted to make something that was fun to watch and make a bunch of money while doing it.

To sum up what everyone (who hates it that is)and use a nifty analogy to boot: DBZ is like plain old water. You think its great if you never drink anything else. We however have maved to better things such as DNL, Mountain Dew, and A&W Root Beer Once you've had the good stuff you'll never go back.
(To hakkai, I loved Vegeta too, Key sylyble lovED, but he got soft and lost his style and ENOURMOUS ego so I found other people who are full of themselves...Like Sora of .Hack//Sign)

Dragonball/Z/GT

I've seen at least 20 anime and manga shows and i still think that Dragonball is one of the best anime i've seen but i don't like it as mutch as i did from the begining. What really drag me into it was the action, fighting effects and the commedy. Very Happy
But then again i think if they would do a new Dragonball serie with today's anime tech it would be much cooler i mean just look att the new anime shows they always use 3D effects that's mutch better now than what it was 20 years ago Rolling Eyes . But for u fight lover's i also recommend Naruto. Twisted Evil

hmm.. I liiked DBZ alot when i am small. But when i see it now, i cant understand how i liked it in the past! Smile

However, the manga still rocks. THe anime is badly made(poor colors), the animation are repititive(a series tht belonged to the museum Rolling Eyes ). It is made so badly that i usually just listen to the song when it is aired. THe song kinda catches me... Razz

But the manga sure belonged to another class as compared to the anime. And GT series is not bad i say...

Well it's badly made because it's old but the saga that start's from the Imperfect Cell saga and the sagas after are pretty well made and so is the colors. If u play or have played Dragonball Z Budokai 2 u will see an intro thats really good made and it's kinda cool to.

DBZ

DBZ will always be special because it is what brought me into the world of Anime. Vegeta is a great character, but I like Trunks (future) best. Anyway... DBZ is over now, so its pretty old. GT was just trying to stretch it out too much (though i thought lv4 was an interesting twist). Basically, the series is over and everyone should move on.
Mainly, though, more kids are watching DBZ for the first time, so they like it. And if it brings more ppl into anime, I say let it. There is nothing wrong w/ DBZ, but if you've seen the series once, thats enough (too many episodes).

ok i don't see why everyone hates DBZ, i personally love it, loved it it doesn't show anymore

it was the anime that i watched first and i was totally hooked on to it, but i didn't see the whole show cause htey dubbed it in Hindi and i really hated that so i stopped watching it.

but if i get a chacne to see it in english/with subtitles i'm sure i would start to love it again, its a great show according to me

I think people like it and continue to watch it because it has a "soap opera effect"-you can miss 5 or 10 episodes and not be completely loss in the story line when you watch it again. With a lot of the anime that comes out now if you miss 1 episode you're completely loss (which sucks). That's why I still watch it Wink .

Well I personally dislike it because of: Some of the things that happened in the story, there fight scenes are so long, and whenever they fight its the same thing. They fight someone, lose, train and become way stronger, fight the same guy and because they are so strong get cocky (or are still weaker than the enemy), then the enemy takes the upper hand and the hero starts losing, the situation looks grim and suddenly the hero is victorious (which is usually Goku). Thats mostly why I hate it but if i had to watch one of them id watch Dragonball.

Yes I know, bumped an old topic

Man I think dbz has become so underrated it's not even funny and these forums is one of the best examples

Wha-? Are you crazy, Nah...the thing is, I really like this show, and it's NOT because of the fighting. Too many people just dimiss the show as a mindless punch-a-thon, as "that fighting anime that turned me off all fighting anime." The thing is, the characters are all really nicely developed. As we watch the show over the years, we get to see the characters grow, and it happens so gradually that we don't even realize it's happening. Toriyama's Freeza saga was probably the best-told part, despite the fact that the anime completely f-ed it up--the reason for everyone to be there in the first place actually made sense, and the transition from the Vegeta fight to the Freeza fight (and the reason Vegeta eventually joined with the rest of the group) was actually logical. I think the show has a lot more substance than everyone else says, but I realize by now that everyone's already made up their mind about the show and no matter what I say, their opinions will stay the soon. Confused

And about the show's originality?Remember it established many things in the industery,it was one of the first to use the cliches it has,the thing is,we had it too late,US was almost the last country to have the licsense for the show

well I think the show is that popular for it's characterzation,it beats most animes I've seen when it comes to that and I not just talking about Pokemon,I include stuff like Naruto,Death Note,& One Piece which I think DBZ beats in characterization
