Suzumiya Haruhi - General discussion thread http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,3508,qusbqz,suzumiya_haruhi.html
Some thoughts after having seen the first episode, the so called episode 0. I managed to avoid knowing anything about this anime except the description in the above link, which doesn't really tell me what to expect.
I was really surprised when I saw episode 0. Perhaps the more accurate description was dumbfounded. I had absolutely no idea where the episode was going but the trip was enjoyable.
The episode was worth quite a few giggles, though I didn't burst out into outright laughter. I think this was mainly due to the narrator's voice-over and the way he kept poking holes into the plot. The sarcasm in his voice was nicely done. No slapstick comedy here which I find appealing as well.
I wonder if this is a taste of what future episodes are like? Currently in the midst of DLing the next ep. Hope it doesn't disappoint.
Anyone else have opinions on this series?

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is an adaptation of a novel titled 'S.O.S Dan'. Some of the questionable things in that lame-ass hilarious movie in episode one will be revealed as we go along. I can't say anything more than that without spoiling the major plot at this stage.
Here's a hint, Don't say I didn't warn you:
I don't know how will KyoAnime handle it in 14 episodes, but by the looks of it, they're doing an excellent job.

I didn't know what to expect from the first episode as well, actually i though there was something wrong with the raw because of the weird picture quality .... but after that when it dawned on me I rewatched the whole episode again and this time I was laughing a lot
The 2nd episode was even better! This show was totally hilarious, and the special thing about it was Kyon as the narrator, it was basically his narrations that brought the whole anime to life!
So its only 13 episodes? thats a pity, i just hope it continues to be as good as it is now

This is the first new series of anime that I have found and it is absolutely fantastic! I've watched through ep 3 and the story just keeps getting better.
The things that clinche it for me are the off the wall chara and the intensity of the animation. I mean the background chara are all in motion even down to the lip movement of a student in the back of the room during a conversation between Kyon and Haruhi.
I love the opening and closing sequences; they are done extremely well, if not cliche.
This is definately one to check out.

I would say that the first episode is good. Worth getting. I'm going to watch ep2 and maybe 3 now. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Finished 2 and half of 3. Get this. Watch this. You'll be missing out on a gem if you don't. After you see an episode, see it again. You'll pick up on things you didn't notice the first run through. This series is amazing! Words can't describe the wonderfulness that is Suzumiya Haruhi no Yutsu. When I get home, I'm gonna watch episode 1 for the the third time just to refresh my memory. This anime needs episode by episode discussion threads, more so than FMP TSR. I think I'm gonna start it just because I can. MWAHAHA!

You need to pay a little more attention. There are only 5 episodes so far, on TV.

It's an excellent anime, there's no question.
The best thing about it though is probably that it's multilayered, especially because the series is [spoiler:6cabe6cdf2]non-linear[/spoiler:6cabe6cdf2].

All these short series seem to have rushed endings to me.

Keep in mind that the ending is actually, for all practical purposes, the beginning. We feel like we're watching the end, but when put into context, you realize this is the essential crux which all the events in the series logically stem from. In that respect, it's actually somewhat interesting how the temporal dislocation affords both beginning and ending to exist in a single locus.
On the other hand, seems like an easy way to avoid committing to a longer running time without deviating from the source material.

I understand your confusion. I think I spent the first episode as a 20 minute WTF moment, which I only made it through by marvelling at the frankly jaw-dropping animation and a distant hope that there would be more footage of Mikuru undressing.
On a more serious note, the first episode is wierd in a wierd anime. Go on to further episodes. In the previews for the next episode, keep in mind that Haruhi is keeping them in chronological order, while Kyon is telling you what's in broadcast order. The two are different. Vastly so. There will be more WTF moments as they reference past events that you haven't seen (yet) and interact with characters that you haven't been introduced to (yet.) It takes on a somewhat surreal edge which actually does enhance the feel of the show, though it takes some getting used to.
The movie that you just saw was a club project for the school's cultural festival. I think I can tell you that much without it being a spoiler. The people in the movie are the characters that you're going to be introduced to in the anime. Eventually.
My advise would be to dive in, and kind of let things coast. If you don't understand it at first, you're probably not meant to yet. It'll make sense later. Don't beat your head into a wall trying to make it all fit NOW.

The best way to understand is to keep watching. But in this case, the 'only' way to understand is to keep watching.

Ah, it is not shown in the first episodes, but later on you will find out that she has a penis. It will change things.
But yeah, as said, just keep watching and don't spoil the show for yourself by reading stuff about the series.. yet.

"I was like, what happened to Haruhi?" in the first episode. Then, I learnt about the fact that this anime had jumbled episodes, so I started watching them in chronological order. I like this series, especially the randomness. Though I fail to see the comedy in it. It wasn't THAT funny.
