.hack//SIGN is the first and best, as it actually has a story. .hack//legend of the twilight is second, but isnt considered part of the .hack world, because it created its own storyline. The manga for it however is considered part of the storyline. .hack//roots while good, its just good for about 13 eps then its just repetitive and extends out till the end. Most ppl watch .hack//roots to see the tri-edge and haseo fight from the .hack//g.u. game.

In terms of chronology, Legend took place after Sign. However, in between the two are the events chronicled in the original .hack games, summarised by Liminality.

GU happens after Liminality, but I don't know if it's before or after Legend.

I didn't like Sign in terms of characters, plot, and story-telling, but the OST is first-class. Yuki Kajiura at her best. Worth acquiring if only for this reason.

g.u. is way after legend. The original game, came to an end right after legend of the twilight, as a sudden fire happened in CC corp building and they lost almost all their servers. Thus 6 years (i think) later they came up with The Word R2 which is where .hack//roots & .hack//g.u. take place.

From all of the .hack series, indeed .hack sign is the best out of them. It got a good story and truly sucked me in the story. Second to that would be .Hack Roots, seeing the new characters and also because of the whole mystery behind Haseo. Then .Hack legend of twilight bracelet, mostly because it didn't have much of a story, although it was fun to watch..
.Hack liminality was fun to, though it didn't really play in the .hack world, but more of a side story.

Hmm ive just watched .hacksign and im really confused now... the ending.. was not really a proper ending at all as the 26th episode talks about a new experience aka mimiru and bear with that multiplayed character.. and when the spellweaver meets suberu.. makes no sense.. ugh ! if thats it then its worst ending ever... ;/
