Ken's right on that - unless the entire company/firm belives in teetotalling, alcoholic drinks are served out in parties way too often. And alchohol does help in lightening the mood after a day of work.
As for me, I started drinking in college 1st year. That would make 18 year old at that time (got an earful when my parents found out. ). Thankfully, I never got in the habbit of pubbing (3-4 times) or binge drinking (just did it once for the sake of it - thats slayer's motto not mine. haha). I like alcohol to relax and chilling out - not for a high or something like that.

My Japanese ex-colleagues had a pantry stuffed full of beer. Kirin I think it was. And at 7pm, when official working hours are over, they go rab a can or two and start "working overtime". Basically it's happy hour for them. Then get to relax to some beer while trying to get a bit more work done (probably due to time difference between here and Japan HQ).
We were plied with beer and other goodies the whole of the last 2 weeks when my clients' worksites were celebrating the Lunar 7th month. Lots of prayers, burning of joss papers, and then it was happy hour.
Beer aplenty, and as much as I hated it (because it gives me bad rashes, probably due to the hops they put in beer), I had to drink a little to entertain the people who gave my all this business.

I made a choice to never drink alcohol. I won't be doing it, even if it makes me a killjoy.

I learn how to control my alcohol intake once I feel "high". Although some may offer me more drinks, I usually decline them nicely. That is why usually I drink slowly to get the high feeling slower. Of course, sometimes I can't turn down some drinking challenge.... >_>''

I started in pubs at late 15, early 16, I think that alcohol is looked at a lot differently over here that in most of the world, Which is probably why we have so many problems.
On the topic of quantity it all depends who you are out with I think, I usually stear clear of spirits and stay on beer at a steady pace, mainly because I don't want to end up like everyone else out side off there faces not knowing what there doing. But if I am with my friend that I started drinking with 3 years ago it is like tradition, we drink anything and everything I think drinking is not a bad thing at all it's just you need to know when to say "Im going home" .I really do not think I could live with out alcohol though, pub's are the greatest places in the world....

It's kinda hard to find a nice pub over here these days. They're no longer the warm, cozy, friendly places they used to be. Too commercialized. Too crowded.
Nobody knows you. Everyone's there (at the hottest-pub-of-the-moment) to be seen just so they can tell their friends "I was there". Dance clubs are the worst of the lot.

That is why I prefer to drink at those places with good ambience and especially if they have jazz as their music. Man, I can chill all night is those places.
But of course, in here, not a lot of places offer those. Now, I mostly drink at home while enjoying some nice movies or music =)

I'm like Zefiris, stared drinking at 15 or 16 years old, averge age here, but I dont enjoy nor like pubs or dance clubs, I rather hang out with my friends at someone's house listening to music and drinking.
As for favourite brands:
Beer: Corona
Whisky: Chivas Regal 12 years old (Johnny is good too, but Chivas is WAY superior)
Vodka: Smirnoff
Wines: I dont have a specific vinatge or anything, I cant stand white wine, so I only drink red wine
Desert wines: Canadian Icewine, best thing I've EVER tried
And thats basically what I drink.
Since Ken menetioned chocolates, I thought it funny to tell of a time, I think I was 16, I got so many chocolates for chirstams, and ate it all in 2 days, that I ended up in a hospital for 3 days XD
@Veleon, its not a matter of being a killjoy or a party pooper, its a matter that you can actually loose business if you dont drink, and I'm not pulling your leg.

PUBS SUCK!!! Who wants to go to a bar, sit under a cloud of cigarette smoke, shout to get ourself heard by the person sitting next to and get drinks for 4-5 times the retail price? No, I rather drink beer in the comfort of my sweet home.
@shinka
Have you tried Teacher's 12 year old Scotch? That was quite good (only whisky which did agree with my stomach). I'd love to try Chivas Regal but my poor wallet... *no cash*

Pubs and Bars are different, I hate bars its just as you said cant talk you also have to listen to crap music But most pubs aren't like that, they don't play the music that loud and you can actually hear your conversation. Also since the smoking ban over here I really miss the smoke as you walk into a pub, although I don't smoke much myself I think it gave pub a very homely feel.
Not a fan of Teachers myself

True, true. You want business, you buy your potential client some drinks and start talking business. That's the way in most Asian countries.
It's different in China though. But just slightly.
Add in "a briefcase full of cash" to the above statement.
Clubs here. Deafening music.
Pubs. Almost as bad.
Wine bars? Better, but I'm not a wine fan. And wine bars are mostly for the have-nots who want others to think they are the do-haves. Sipping wine and looking outwardly very successful. Poor sods.

I see I'm not the only one repulsed by bad music in clubs and pubs.
Luckily there are few great places to drink in my town, where they play not so loud jazz and nice chill-out. I think such music is the best as drinking background.

My preference: Beer.
What I do not like: Whisky (does not agree with my stomach)
I would agree with the above... Never got used to whiskey, cognac or punsch (NB: punsch is not punch). No stomach problem, the taste simply doesn't agree with me.
There are a couple of traditional drinks here in Sweden, often served at X-mas dinner and other festivities, with the common name of snaps . They are served in small glasses and one usually drinks them in one sip. IMO, the only good thing with snaps is the tradition of singing a little song before drinking them. I usually drink wine - served in regular wine glass, thank you very much - instead of snaps if I can get away with it.
(Cold) beer is fine every once in a while - especially on hot days. However, what I look forward to drink once or twice a year, typically at X-mas and new year's eve, is Baileys Irish Cream.
My preferred drink of all categories is the all-mighty tea. Nothing beats it. Hardly a day goes by without at least a cup (or 2 or 3...) of this beverage.

Bailey's... nice, but a little too sweet for me these days. I used to like it. Much like how I used to like only milk chocolate, these days I tend to go for the dark ones.

Mmm, so far I like it - but that may be due to the fact it's consumed so infrequently. And agreed, it's sweet. Would probably grow tired of it if I'd have drunk it, say, every month or so.

If you like Baileys, you may want to try Sheridan. It is also a type of sweet liquor, but I feel that it is not as sweet as Baileys and it tastes much better than Baileys, IMO.

I almost never drink. I don't have any problems with it. I just think that paying exhorbitant amounts of money for lasting a few seconds is irrational. I really couldn't careless whether it makes me even mroe of a social outcast. Especially in Australia, where drinking is part of the culture.
I had a bit of vodka one day in February. That's probably the only time I've had any alcohol in the last 18 months or so.

@simon - As my mother would attest, anything but. ^^
@avalanche - That's okay but way too expensive and too sweet. If I ever have any, it's got to be at least 50% alcohol or it's a waste of time. So it has to be vodka or tequila.

Thanks for the hint, jsy3k. Read this about Sheridan:
"With its white liqueur having a white chocolate richness, and the black of warm coffee and whiskey, the whole rounded off by a chocolate & nutty finish."
The "chocolate richness" sounds good, however, they do mention whiskey there... The latter makes me hesitate slightly.
If the whiskey influence is negligible, I just might check it out.

Hummm.... a topic that I really like XD
Beer's too sweet. I drink it once in a while, while in a barbecue or a small reunion with friends. But it has no effect on me. At least, if I'm careful XD I remember that in a party after the high school sports festival I drank 22 bottles of beer... and I stopped there, since I felt a little dizzy. After that I swore I'd never drink that much, so normally I stop at the 6th or 7th beer. Many say here that "city people dont't know how to drink, but country people do", and it's true: I'm from a small city in the country, and while I'm fine drinking, many people of the capital are drunk, lying in the floor, etc, etc.
I like whiskey. Pure, or in the rocks. Forget the mixes and stuff. My fav brands are Johnny Walker Black Label, and Chiva's Regal 14 or 18 years (I like 14 or older XD). Same with vodka. Pure. Untouched. Absolute for me. Smirnoff is too commercial
I tried Bayley's once. It was good, but I haven't had a chance to drink it again One that I haven't tried yet is the Ponche Crema (the venezuelan equivalent of the eggnog).
I hate red wine. I like white wine. Period.
Haven't tried tequila, and never will. Too scary.
I hate rum. Maybe because I live in a country where half of the drunkards consume rum.
Don't like cocktails in general.
Never tried brandy.
Well, that's all I have to say.... for now

Where on earth do they make beer that is sweet?! In Australia, beer is more bitter than 105-year olds. Makes me sick the moment it hits my tongue. And it just feels heavy, like someone poured cement down my throat.
Whisky scares me. I know people that are slave to it. Tequila is very versatile, smooth and fiery. Whereas whisky/scotch has virtually no taste for me.
I've never been drunk and I don't plan to ever be.

How large were those bottles of beer?
Because seriously, 5% of alcohol in your blood stream will kill you. A normal adult male has around 5 litres of blood, so 250 ml of alcohol in a man's blood, and he will reach heaven - literally. Considering that beer is around 8% alcohol, thats around 3.1 litres of beer. So question: just how many ml did you drink that night?
@last
alchohol is very subjective. I find whisky too bitter and vodka fiery, some people say that its the other way around!

Oh, they were the standard: 355ml, and 4.5º
Well, I didn't fall into an ethylic coma because I wasn't drinking like it was the fountain of youth or something like that.... I spent like 6 hours, and I ate bits of stuff while at it maybe that helped to diminish the impact of alcohol in my body for a while.... Oh, and going to the bathroom also helped
And what kind of beer is 8º??? british/german black ale??? I've never seen beer with such a high alcoholic degree (well, only the russian ones, but that's another story XD)

Lol, then its understandable. I myself have taken 2 pitchers within three hours so I can understand about the bathroom thingy.
As for beers with 8% ABV - you really need to get your hands on some Trappist beer like Chimay or Achel. These beers are made by monks from Belgium. Heavenly stuff my man!

I jsut heard from an acquaintance of mine about this monks in Belguim that make the finest beer in the world, entirely hand made, but only sell it to the public like 5 times a year or something like that. Are these those?

I don't thing I'll try any of those anytime soon XD the most "eccentric" stuff (i.e. foreign brands) I can get here is Heineken, Corona, Fuller's Porter and Baltika. Otherwise, it's national brands, like Polar or Brahma

Heineken is water! pffft! Corona is good though. As for Belgian beers , I would suggest that you try it - atleast once for the sheer difference in taste. I was previously under the impression that German beer was the best (due to the Oktoberfest) but it was only last year that I came to relaize that it is in Belgium that you kind find the most variety in the beer styles and taste.
@shinka
While I don't know about the rarer stuff (Chimay Dorree for instance is available only at the Chimay Monastery; no where else), most of the other beers are mass produced. However almost none of the Trappist beers are meant to be sold for profit - they are made only to finance the monastery itself.

At the moment I favor (cold) czech pilsner beer, such as Starobrno, Pilsner Urquell.
They're quite refreshing.
I have yet to try belgian beer.

I cant believe there has not been any votes but mine for Guinness
Although every series I seen that is set in the US they drink Guinness out of bottles, that's just silly in all of Britain & Ireland I have never seen a bottle of Guinness. Draught is the win!
If you cant tell I have had a lot of it tonight

Well, whiskey's a little better since it got 2 measely votes.
In any case, I have ried stout (Guiness and ABC) and I thought they somehow tasted better than beer. I don't know why.

Not for me, Uncle Kenny. I really do not like stouts, it is just too bitter for my taste. Tried to like it, but can't seem to do that...
Now I regretted not buying Cordon Bleu when I was back from Indonesia 3 months ago. I asked my relatives who passed by Duty Free in Changi Airport, and now it is S$50 more expensive that when I saw it in June... ~~>_<~~

Too bad...
IIRC, the limit per passenger as 6 cans of beer and/or 2 bottles of whatever. Too bad then, it would have been a good chance for you to stock up on some basic necessities.

Going out of Singapore, yes. Going in to Singapore, no. Only one liter of liquor, or 6 cans of beer.
Well, one bottle is enough for my personal drink for at least 4-5 months. I got the Martell that I purchased 3 months ago, and it still have 1/4 left.
Need to drink it fast. Does not want it to expire >_>''

Will it ever expire? My old man's got several bottles from the early '80s that are still unopened. I think they must be stinky by now.
