Well, here's some major things in its favour.

1. Newtype US's 25 greatest of all time anime poll in 2005 - fans voted it in at #12.

2. Anime Insider's 50 greatest anime of all time, compiled by leaders in the industry in Japan and the US (studio CEOs, series directors, label leaders, reviewers, actors) voted it at #4.

3. It still ranks high in NFOs list.

Opinion and difference is a crucial part of humanity. But I think FLCL was one of the most important titles to get anime to gain a niche in the Western world. There weren't cultural differences or references we didn't have to investigate to understand. The message was universal - a coming of age tale. The Pillows made music that transcended language and made them the most liked Asian band in the US by a country mile.

Regardless of what you may personally think, FLCL was a great example of the wackiness and the seriousness the anime medium is capable of simultaneously displaying.

I love FLCL. It did take a couple of times too figure out what was going on, but everytime I watch it I see something funny that i missed. The music was great for me too. Gainax did a super job. It's my favorite, I guess those who don't like it a lot really hate it.
