Akira Live Action http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1134795/
Quote: (yanked this from wiki) Akira is expected to be developed into two live action films with the first scheduled for a summer 2009 release. Warner Bros. and Appian Way Productions will adapt the two movies from the manga. The first film is expected to be an adaptation of the first three volumes. The second film may cover the last three volumes. Ruairi Robinson is directing in his feature film debut. He was nominated for a short film Oscar in 2002 for Fifty Percent Grey. Gary Whitta is writing the script. Andrew Lazar, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Davisson will produce the film. The film is set in New Manhattan, a city rebuilt by Japanese money after being destroyed 31 years ago. No announcement has been made regarding the cast, although it is reported that DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing the lead roles of Kaneda and Tetsuo, respectively.

We had a rather lively discussion here regarding live adaptions of anime. It was rather general though, and dealt with more than just Akira. You might be interested to check it out.
For discussions specific to the Akira live adaption, we can continue using this thread.

so Katsuhiro Ôtomo is going to be executive producer, i wonder if thats in name only to sale the film or if he'll actually take part.
Scott Lukowski (who worked watchmen) is the concept illustrator, i dont know if that means will get a visual experience or not though o.O lets hope so, that and a good adaptation of course.

Some things don't transition well to live action. Whether you stay true to the story or not, because some visual aspects don't look good using live action actors, it's not going to sit well with some viewers.

They're probably just gonna make a movie where psychic kids try to destroy the world or something and worst why the hell is the setting in Manhattan?

As to the setting, it's probably just to explain why everyone is speaking in English.
Certainly there are aspects which I can see them having difficulty with doing in live action, however the state of CGI makes it possible. Things don't look as hopelessly fake in CGI as they used to.

It's not the way they look but rather the fact that I can't get my little brain reconfigured to believe such feats possible.
You show real life humans (cybernetically enhanced or not) doing impossible things and I will automatically go "That's crazy shit!"
Likewise, a live action GITS will not work for me either.

Work on the movie seems to be going on a lot from the way news keeps coming in (unlike the adaptation of Battle Angel which has slipped of the radar completely) I just read somewhere that the Akira movie which is coming up will be directly adapted from the manga and not the anime movie. Caprio is not acting on it, just supervising and all that. Thats the good news.
Testsuko will be renamed to Travis. Thats the bad news.

Let me guess. The setting will be post-apocalyptic California?
Sad, isn't it?
