John Butler owns all. Any guitar, any riff, any speed, any lick, he can do with absolute gusto. Once you've seen John Butler live, every other guitarist in history pales tro mere insigificance.

I know the John Butler Trio, a friend of mine actually used to listen to them quite a bit. "Three" was a good album, but that's the only album I've heard from them.

Can I just say that maybe I was TOTALLY wrong by claiming that hide or Hendrix were the best. It has come to my attention that I may just be passing along a biased opinion and somewhat forcing it on people. hide wasn't as good as I thought he was , but he could've still outplayed some of the chumps playing with their guitar in the bands today.

Now go out and buy a whole bunch of classic rock ablums and be amazed.

I am well informed of the "hair" bands of old(which is basically visual kei, but w/e) and I listen to them on occasion. I have a few Sophmore friends that are very devout to bands like Van Halen and that, and I talk with them about the music all the time. So, if anything you need to buy some hide CD's.

Of all the people I mentioned, only Van Halen would be considered in a hair metal band. At least that is how i look at it.

Well because i expect you to back up your point, i would like you to point out which of the people i mentioned would be in a hair metal band. So i can either retort with witty long though out post, or simply agree. By doing something like that really proves nothing other than the fact you can make a post, that contributes nothing to the thread.

You know, I was thinking of Dragonforce when I was putting the last comment up. The guy is only fast with his fingers, he doesn't put that extra touch in it as Jimi Hendrix does.

if that "touch" you talking about, is the fact that jimi hendrix's solos sound a lot cooler than dragonforces, I completely agree. I was just pointing out that you said "Jimi Hendrixcan out guitar anyone." Technically speaking Herman Li is playing harder stuff than Jimi Hendrix.

I myself prefer the classic rock sound. When a little goes a long way. Angus young is my favorite guitarist, as I mentioned a lot earlier in the thread. I think he has the best style.

Hendrix 4ever!

That was what I said in this thread the first time XD It was just a conditioned reflex, I may like Hendrix a lot, but he's not "God" to me or anything Confused

However, since it was a long time ago when I posted that, I was lost when I decided to check this thread today, so I bothered a bit, and read all the posts... And decided to post something as well :3

(NOTE: The following is just my personal opinion. No third-party were asked or stuff like that... You know what I mean.)

There is no "best" guitar player in the world. Period. To debate if A-guy or B-guy is the best guitarist on Earth is just as ridiculous as discussing if there is absolute truth or if God is an old bearded guy or Morgan Freeman. One just have to look at all these guys and ALL he different musical genres. Besides, one also have to look at the date. You can't compare Herman Li with Jimi Hendrix. Different genres, and different decade (The only simmilariy between Hendrix and Li is that both of them are self-taught, lol).

People say "Hendrix is the best guitarist ever", or "He's the first guitar hero!" or "He was a total pwnage!", but that may be just plain ignorance, or simply they didn't listened to other things. It's truth that Hendrix was a pioneer in his time: he was the first using a wah-wah pedal and play with lots of fuzz, distortion and a really nice overdive; and that he's the main influence of many modern and talented guitar players, but people should not overrate him. The guy may have been talented and stuff, but it was the hippie-era: he liked to smoke some weed and go to parties with Mr. LSD. You just have to listen (and watch) some of his late concerts: mindless shredding and burning his guitar Confused Come on!

As I said before, people can't compare people from different "eras" and genres and stuff. If there must be a comparison, it should be fair, right? Let's put it in a simple example.

I'll compare Kirk Hammett with Joe Satriani. Ok, they seem to be neighbors, right? Nope~. Many people already know that Satriani was Hammett's guitar teacher (and also was Steve Vai's, but that's off-topic right now). Anyways, you can't say that Kirk Hammett is better than Satriani, and that he can pwn him hundreds of time with obscenely fast guitar solos (unless you are a über-hardcore Metallica fan). Satriani have deep musical knowledge, and applies it to his songs in different, innovative and cool ways. Hammett only uses Harmonical-minor scales in his solos. Personally I can't see Satriani's influence in his playing, only the hammer-on/pull-off in order to achieve speed. Besides, the genres they play are totally different too: instrumental, jazz fusion, hard rock (Satriani) and heavy, trash metal (Hammett).

Well, that wasn't fair at all, right? Humm... Okay, how about this: Herman Li and Luca Turilli.

They both play power metal. They're fast. And all of the songs are epi-like themed. Luca Turilli have musical knowledge. Herman Li is self taught. But Li's solos rock (I admit it, they're cool). In this scenario is hard to decide who is better.

Another ridiculous comparison would be between John Petrucci and Robert Fripp. Just comparing one of the fathers of progressive rock with the co-founder of the most influential progressive metal bands today is kinda unfair. Okay, not at all. In fact, the only ridiculous thing is that both of them are obscenely fast and ridiculously virtuosos.

Other scenerio would be B.B. King and Eric Clapton. This IS unfair. I mean, the KING and Clapton. I'd better shut up and stop the comparisons.

If there must be a debate of who is the best guitar player ever in history and (known) universe, I think it should be based on their influence in other generations of guitarists, and their legacy. Obviously, this leads to the very beginning of all this: Hendrix. This guy is the main influece of, at least, 80% of all the guitar players. Seriously, if he had never showed up, we'd probably still listening Elvis-like rock. Maybe some other guy would have poped-out and started playing with distortion and stuff, but the effect would have never been the same.

Whatever, I'm getting tired of thinking what should I write next, so I'd make a list of what I consider to be the best guitar player I've listened to
ever. Some people will agree, and some not, but anyways, it's my opinion XD I'll list them in no order, just to avoid some future rethoric.

Jimmy Page
Joe Perry
Tim Reynolds
Brian May
Joe Satriani
John Petrucci
Slash
Van Halen
Steve Vai
Duane Allman
Neil Young
David Gilmour
Ritchie Blackmore
Kirk Hammett (lol)
The Edge
B.B. King
Santana
Trey Anastasio
Eric Clapton
Robert Fripp
...
and a lot I can't remember now XD

P.S: I have listened to Hide, and although he was talented and stuff, he wasn't the big deal, IMHO.
PP.S: I never wrote such a long post, so my head is aching a bit. If anyone have a rant or want to complain, PM me XD

And I am not going to knock your opinion, but have you heard "X"? Have you heard "Art of Life"? Have you heard "Scars"? Those three songs right there show that he is better than some of the guitar "gods" from America, even if he is dead.

Yes, indeed. I have heard those songs, and some more from X Japan, and I recognize that Hide was quite talented (and better than some american guitar "gods"), but unfortunately his legacy and influence didn't have a big impact outside Japan (or Asia, IDK). This leads to the quite infamous rule that most (if not all) guitar gods/heroes/pwnage are "American/British/or something in those lines", and it quite angers me, because there are many talented guitar player that aren't recognized as such, only because they are in really underground indie bands, or doesn't have some international fame, or don't fint in the "american-like" category. For example, a good friend of mine is REALLY good playing guitar (many people call him "John Petrucci the 2nd" XD), but he is not famous even in the national market because there's a lack of interest in his band from the label and from the general public (here people is more interested in some-kind-of-bulls***t-which-is-not-music, not in progressive/heavy metal). Argh, it angers me a lot more the fact that I live in a "caribbean" country where 80% of the people "hate" music made with guitars Evil or Very Mad.

Anyways, I'll continue this post later, 'cause I have some urgent business to do tomorrow and I have to wake up early XD

The thing that you have to remember about all of the guitarists mentioned is their technique, each one has their own way in which they play and each style has different effects on people.
Also it’s all opinions on who the best guitarist is, I personally grew up listing to aerosmith and queen.
My friend constantly tells me how sheltered I am by the type of music I listen to, but at the end of the day its what you prefer and the style of music. The techniques used by the late greats still echo today for example some of the solos by van halen may seem simple to play today but back when they started out it shocked the world.

Music is about expression and this is shown through the musicians style and technique.

I actually voted for Jimi. Does he really get possessed by some invisible identity when he plays? Rumor has it that he gets possessed when he plays. Well I've seen some videos of his concerts and he really do look like possessed.

@ANIMENATAKU It's called being high Very Happy

To be honest....never actually listened to any Hendrix, being born in the 90's, the good age of rap and hip hop. Although as of 2005, that's on a downfall.

But I digress. My point was that I suppose my tastes are a lil' more comtemporary. I think my all time favourite guitarists (and therfore greatest in my opinion) is Paul Wong Koon Chung from the HK band "Beyond". I urge all who haven't heard of them check it out 'coz it's real heartfelt stuff. Other than that I'd have to say the guy from L'Arc En Ciel (Hyde?...Hide?) is pretty decent and Ryo from Maximum The Hormone has a pretty mean guitar too. BECK (Beat Crusaders) guitarist Ryuusuke Minami haha...nah Toru Hidaka or whichever dude plays the solo's and stuff ain't that bad either. I wouldn't say Kurt Cobain was a good guitar player so much as he was a good musician...Smells like teen spirit lolz. Finally, whoever plays the Smash Bros. Brawl remix of Firefield is god haha and well I suppose the guitarists of the Black Mages (FF soundtracks) are awesome even though they're two people really.

And c'mon people, where's Funtwo/ Jerry C in this debate huh? Canon rock?...youtube "guitar" and click the first video if you SERIOUSLY haven't seen it yet.

Andy James was a name that slipped under my radar and I'd really recommend anyone into instrumental rock guitar music to give his album a listen. Released last year and called In the Wake of Chaos. This guy is seriously talented imo.

John Butler playing Ocean, on a 12-string guitar. Not only does it sound beautiful, the technique is impeccable. Don't get impatient at the start, it just keeps getting better.

After looking through quite a few of John Butler's stuff I find that he has a very good technique on a 12 string. However, his style isn't terribly unique. It is very similar to Eric Johnson in my opinion.

I only really liked Ocean. He was refreshing but I don't find him to have a lasting impression on me.

Seriously, I find anything with more than 4 strings intimidating. Laughing

Love the string spacing of a P-bass but I've got small hands so a J-bass it is for me. Such irony.

Who's this Eric Johnson guy and what genre does he play? Too lazy to view that link.

Eric Johnson is very instrumental rock.

Wiki

Here is a video of his most famous song (mostly because of Guitar Hero III)

Cliffs of Dover
This version is live and improvisation.

The intro is was made me think of him when John Butler was playing. He plays many things like that intro.

Chuck Berry will always be the best. Seems like Jimi Hendrix is the most popular though.

Speaking of Johnsons, I'm wondering why no one's mentioned Robert Johnson yet. Sad

Edit: never mind Slayer linked to the Rolling Stone list earlier in this thread, but still, I think he's well worth mentioning if we're talking about classic guitarists, considering how many musicians he's influenced. He's very good. I've heard quite a few songs off of his compilation recordings album.

I'll say Mattias Eklundh only because he haven't been mentioned (or has he?). He's got some really obscure ideas and what's more... they work! As a big plus he's really funny (and he likes to talk during concerts). Laugh guaranteed (sp?). Recommended for anyone who likes either noise or comedy or both. I've seen him live... at my school! Beat that.
