Wow! Talk about necro!
My 2 cents: I don't understand the point of this anime. Wasn't interesting enough for me to finish it.

Would've been happy with this series whether it had a sad or happy ending. In animes where I like the characters, I prefer there be a happy ending so I guess it worked out for me.

Hmmm...after seeing it, it's not as bad as I predict it to be. I liked the story and the animations. It was not the best show I seen, but it was very good.
I wouldn't watch it over again(unless all anime got banned and no new ones come out :I ), but for the most part, I enjoyed it and I didn't waste my time.

Indeed same here, mostly with anime series I got that, and what now feeling, with this series I didn't. I felt happy it ended, although a bit sad, still a good ending.

I watched it when it was airing (eg a year or two ago).. it had the occasional good background music, but most of that was rather boring as well.
Anyway, the main thing about this anime is rather obvious:
And, of course, the yuri undertones.

Mai Hime IS NOT awesome. Actually, I found it kinda lame. Weak characters. The only one I liked was the long haired one with the doggie and 2 guns (heck, I can't even remember her name).

You aint alone here, I agree with you. The girls are good alright. To put it in a crude way - The show is all about tits and ass. Be it if you like Mai or Kuga (the hot girls) or the lesbian female or the other host of females. The show was in essence a perfect example of flawed execution - too many flaws in the characters, too many flaws in the plot. But the genral public wants tits and asses - so yeah to quote the first fellow:

I agree it isn't awesome...it's just average/below average. It never really had a plot to speak of. I watched it over a year ago when it was still on fansub, so I have a scant memory of it, but I do remember I liked Natsuki's personality the most out of the characters. Mai was a bit too transient at times, but somewhat likable from what I recall. I disliked Tate and his little sister (who was it, Shiho?), among a few of the other characters, they were just a headache to keep up with at times. *shakes head* The problem was too many characters being established and then having them *spoiler*
Quote: die one after the other and then be reborn at the end...it was a waste and overwrought melodrama. Not to mention the use of fanservice was just, well...unnecessary. But since the plot wasn't always clear but for randomized humor, I guess that's the way the creators intended it.
Mai Otome was quite average too, but at least it attempted to have some realm of a plot, but it is somewhat of a "side 2" of Mai Hime by having the characters reprise different roles.

I have to disagree, while I'll admit that the fanservice and t&a were a bit excessive I quite enjoyed the story. I felt that it did a good job of leading you one way and then taking a 180 degree turn.
Quote: Specifically, after they've formed 'Hime Rangers' when Nagi tells them that they have start fighting each other. I also liked in the end how they were able to overcome Kokuyou no Kimi with the help of Miyu and Alyssa. I always like it when former enemies become allies.
I also liked the theme of how people can become incredibly cruel and twisted if they are forced into extreme circumstances... because I'm a wierdo and I like stuff like that.
IMHO Mai Hime had a good character balance, a fairly complex story, and despite the deux ex machina ending I thought it was very good. Especially for an anime that was based on a manga but didn't follow the original story.

Actually, that's not quite correct, the manga followed the anime series in it's creation, so in respects, it is different from the anime series.

Err, I have to correct one of the previous posts:
The fanservice was necessary. Without fanservice, there wouldn't have been a series at all..
Truly, the one thing I liked about this series was character design. And that because of the ridiculous amount of fanservice :p

If you like stuff like that, Infinite Ryvius is WAY better than Mai Hime. More complex, a lot darker and just WAY better.

You read my thoughts!!! But putting that aside - the most ironical thing for me was that I watched Infinte Ryvius just before Mai-Hime. I was obviously going to draw comparsions between the two, and Infinte Ryvius comes out on the top with its griity plot (The only place where MAi Hime scores is in the animation and sound - but then Mai-hime was made 5 years after IR)
The thing which ticked me off most was that how this series gets a 9.0 while IR gets 8.8 (I admit that IR is in my top 5 anime of all time), just becuase of the girls and their figures and that HORRIBLE deux ex machina (wonders how can people like such an absurd plot twist). And most of them write - "This is the best drama...." *bleh*

Admittedly, the animation in IR sucked BIG TIME. Then again, animation is just a part of the overall judging criteria for an anime.
Mai Hime's plot is just weak. Beautiful animation does not cover up for a deficiency in the plot department. There just isn't enough thought given to the development of the characters or their personalities.
Just to illustrate how lame this anime was, I don't remember any of the characters' names anymore, and I just saw this not long ago.
O.K., I remember Mai's name but that's just because it's in the title of the anime.

Nah, I didn't forger her. She's my favourite character from Mai Hime. I mean, biker chick, big dog, 2 guns. Sexy long hair and great bod. Who can forget her?
I only forgot her name....

I was bored one week and watched them all. The fanservice definitely peeked my interest, especially how they come out right off the bat. But I hung around to find out what happens. It's only 26 eps, so its not like a Hikaru No Go or something.
I've been watching the English ones lately, and they did a pretty good job capturing the essence of the show. Good characterization for such a big cast. I would guess it's hard to write for that many people and keep it fresh. Good job!
Natsuki is definitely the most intriguing character. It's funny that she is the headmaster in Mai Hime's sequel, Mai Otome (or My-Otome). I'll have to check that out too.

I have to agree with this show not being the best in the world, but I still think it is a good show. I am not a big fan of fanservice (haha) but I hardly noticed alot of it the first time I watched it. It is obciously an overdone story but I think the creators did a very good job with it. The characters are what pulled the show through.
I am, by far, a huge fan of the second half. First half, meh, just sets it up for the second half and shows a little skin.
BTW I hated the ending. Worst ending ever in my book.

Yea, the ending was totally ruined. It felt like a children's series with all the cool superheroes finally getting together to battle one big last boss dude kinda thing. ;D I was kinda expecting one that'd fit the tone of the second half of the series, not a "happily ever after" one. ;D

it wasn't "AWSOME!!!" but it was pretty decent actually.
besides the girls/fan-service, etc. the plot got pretty good after the midpoint. the part when Mai gets pissed off and tries to kill Mikoto was quality.
i blew thru the series in a few days, really easy to watch and worth it. the ending was pretty lame, but whatever i enjoyed it

Hey, Mikoto is so irritating anyone would have tried to kill her. Myself included.

sorry to drag this back up but I just finished this series and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. SOme of it is thematically like Fate Stay Night, but it stands out in its own way. I wasnt prepared for how much angst there was though. good lord. But I was drawn into this show and Im not even referencing the fanservice. the story itself and the characters were interesting to me. The ending I felt was a bit weak but overall I really had fun watching it.

WTF? I love Mikoto!!!!!! She was soooooo cute!!!! x3 And she even managed to pull the cuteness off when she was evil. o_O; <3 <3 <3
Yea, the ending was lame. I thought some of it was so random, but some of it was funny. x3 But, overall, the anime was action-packed, emotionally-charged, and quick to watch, so I enjoyed it a lot. I love when I can relate to the characters (I cried for some of them), and then enjoy watching well-drawn + well-animated fights (like in Bleach ), so the plot, or lack of one, doesn't particularly bother me.
I would have loved Natsuki so much more if she didn't try so hard at being cool. It was so obvious that that was what she was trying to do from the first moment you see her in the anime. I prefer the effortless kind of cool that Fujino (the student council president) has, even tho she has plenty of character flaws. (She also has the same b-day as me. Happy Birthday to me and Fujino Shizuru!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! x infinity) xD
My Favorite Characters of MaiHiMe: Mikoto, Fujino, Akane, Midori, Reito, and Akira. Alyssa and Miyu redeemed themselves, so I like them too.
My Most Hated Characters: Shiho, Tate, Nao, Nagi, and Haruka.
And the other characters I didn't mention I was either ok with, or don't really remember em. Some of them were weak and unmemorable, but overall I think the creator did very well at incorporating all of the characters clearly and with lots of action, drama, etc. It's not a very deep anime, but if you're superficial and like it when the 'plot' moves quickly, filled with action and emotion, then you'd like MaiHiMe.
