Discussion post - people who make games? Gamings scripts/programs? Didn't see a topic like this here. So, I'm not sure if this belongs in Gamer's Corner or in a general discussion of Anime/Manga related items, but I figure I'd go ahead and open the discussion because this is something I've been playing around with since last weekend.
I wonder if there's anyone around here who's designed games of their own, meaning RPG or any other themed games that are playable.
When I was in high school, I've played around with some odd game scripts (very limited amount of it, so at least I know basic coding, but depends on the language being used. ). I used to make text adventure games as a part of a special program I was a part of one summer, and I thought it was a fun experience because I published a "thesis" like paper on the experience and even had a few people play the game in the aftermath. Nothing huge, but the project in and of itself was a lot of fun. Of course, it's years old (I think it's on one of my old PCs at home), it's a text adventure computer game with only a few graphics, and not very many people that I know usually play that now when compared to graphic heavy computer or console games.
Long story short, kind of had a flashback to that experience this past weekend. I came across a program called RPGmaker VX -I've heard it's a pretty popular franchise with respect to anime adapted games, and I'm actually familiar with Ruby, the language that it uses to propel the system. Matter of fact, I think it might be the script that I used back when I was in high school. I've played around with the program this past weekend just for kicks. I haven't worked with coding/scripting something like this in a while, so I'm kind of treading water with seeing how it works, but it's a little something I liked playing around with in some of the spare time I had this weekend.
That experience made me wonder if anyone on Animenfo had been in the process of making games or at least experienced doing something of that nature. If not, have you ever wanted to be involved in the process of doing something like this?

Well, I've tried some simple stuff, but never could quite figure everything out....BTW I do happen to be a fan of text-based games....they're a lots of fun IMO. I would have to say that if I got the opportunity to get serious with actually making games... and learning how to make good ones, I'd be all for it.

I've messed a small amount of scripts in college but that's as far as it went apart from I made a bullet shooter in Flash for a project once.

I've played some of the pokemon game on pc. Some guy did really good job with it. Anyways, I always wanted to create a poke game with more complex game play and stuff. I remember that I had downloaded microsoft visual, but kind of got discouraged because of the time constraint.

That's really cool, guys. I figured it be worth asking on some measure.
@drake, Yeah, I also consider myself a fan of text-adventure games not simply from the simplicity of it but also nostalgia. If you have the right language to work with and the time to devote to making one, it's really a lot of fun. Huge learning curve though, and a lot of patience. Luckily that summer I had time and an interest in both
@arunas I'm familiar with Microsoft Visual, but I don't think I've used it to date. But I definitely can understand that. I've seen actually a lot of interesting games that people have written based on well-established franchises (i.e. Final Fantasy) for the PC. It's always interesting to see how people are driven to create things based on what they love.
