Name my portable hard drive! Well, I have a 500G drive being replaced under warranty. I've already replaced the drive myself, but they're sending me a new one. So, what should I name it?
There's another 1TB drive that will also likely be added soon, so I may take two candidates, or maybe I'll just name the other one as I like, but I'll report back here when I've formatted the drives.
Hmmm... I do already have 3 drives named for characters voiced by Inoue Kikuko, there exists the possibility here to make that 5. (Actually, I may be tempted to do that just because, if there's not enough participation in the poll.)

Makoto of course!
Or Kyoko perhaps (I have been bitten by the Ikkoku bug!)...
And now that I think of it - Horo!

Her name is Motoko, not Makoto in Ghost in the Shell

Motoko for the 1TB drive. Ritsuko (Sniper Girl) for the 500GB one.

@Anothar: Oops. Typo.
@Zefiris: Heh. Yeah, I think that would work out, too.
@Aval: I already have a drive named Kyouko. Even dropping the "u" for different romanisation rules, that would start to confuse even me. Horo? Spice and Wolf ? Haven't seen that yet.

You should. I'd probably name her for a 320GB 2.5" drive though. She's not really big "up there". But she has a long, beautiful tail. Probably if you bought a brand that inlcuded a branded 1 meter USB cable with your drive, that'd be perfect.

Some great names there but, imo best choice would be Chiyo.

If you've already got a Inoue Kikuko theme going, why not keep it up if possible? What are the current names you have? Other than Belldandy. I'm sure you've got Belldandy.
I vote for Sanae (also voiced by Inoue Kikuko). Another suggestion is Shatyarn from Galaxy Angel but she never appeared in the anime.

I wouldn't say that it's a "theme" but there are currently 3 drives with named of characters which Inoue Kikuko voiced.
They are Belldandy (Ah My Goddess), Chitose (Chobits) and Mizuho (Onegai Teacher/Onegai Twins)
Funny that you would say that you're sure that I'd have Belldandy... That's actually one of the newest. The one that I've had the longest would be Mizuho.
Though I haven't looked specifically, there are probably as many who are voiced by Tanaka Rie in that list.

I vote for Sanae as well. Not just for fitting your trend of Kinuko Inoue voiced characters, but I think it's a nice name.

Heh. I've got 3 people saying that they voted Sanae, but there are only 2 votes for that name in the poll. Actually, I like that name too.

I was never able to vote in the poll for some reason and I'm very sure that I've never voted in this poll before, so I thought I'd post who I'd vote for here.

A 1TB drive should be nicknamed Terry...nothing more, nothing less.

@Rose: Wierd...
Well, unless it did allow Rose to vote, or something else strange happened, then Sanae is now in the lead, with the voting closing "soon"
Mokoto is either tied or just behind that.
Sorry, I'm not going to use "Terry" for various reasons, not the least of which is that it certainly isn't going to be my only 1TB drive. (Well, I may not buy many more of them with the 1.5TB drives hitting a similar price point.

If you count above, there should be 4 votes for Sanae.

Damnit! I HAVE, my fingers just won't cooperate when I'm typing the name. I've seen the movie, Innocence, SAC, 2nd gig, SSS... I've seen everything animated in the GITS series.
Normally my typing isn't htat that bad, but I do get my dyslexic moments.
Edit: The above typo wasn't on purpose, but...

Well, the time limit on the poll is coming to a close, and it appears that Sanae is inthe lead. As such, at least one of the drives will get that name. I may pull veto on the second one, or not.
Edit: Oct 20/2009
It seems that the winner is Sanae, with Mokoto in 2nd. I don't know if I'll use that for the other drive, though I haven't removed it from the static bag yet...
Edit again, Oct 25/2009
Okay, I just got notification that the drive has been shipped. In the meantime, I bought a 1.5TB drive (They were on sale, and I couldn't resist!) and named it Yayoi.

I'm in the process of moving these drives from the various machines around the house and into a NAS server if for no other reason than to make things more simple. I've got a box which has 8 on-board SATA connectors, and put in 2 additional 6 port SATA controller cards, as well as an additional 6 USB 2.0 ports and 4 USB 3.0 ports. (Making 14 USB ports in total.) with 8 eSATA ports and all of that USB, I ought to be good for expansion for a while, and then I can properly centralise my storage.

Wow.. I thought I was bad..
I was going to go with NAS, but I didn't want my hard drives spinning all the time for nothing.. So I'm going with a shelf option. ~_^

I'm building it around FreeNAS, which has the option to spin down the drives if they're not accessed in a certain timeframe. I'm upgrading my USB enclosures to ones with power management as well, to do the same thing, if for no other reason than to keep things cool.
I was planning to build it on an Atom mobo, but I got ahold of an older mobo with a Celeron soldered on, which still has all of the APM features, though the on-board SATA is only SATA1, but considering that's still faster than the gigabit ethernet, I figure that's not a problem.
If I wanted to grab stuff off of a shelf, I'd just use DVD archives anyway, the point of this is that the storage is on-line when I want it.
For what it's worth, yes, I admit that it's a problem. Though with the price of drives where it is, it's easy enough to just start to cycle older drives out in favor of new ones.

Indeed.. Drives are dirt cheap for storage these days. My issue is that I now have like 2x 250GB 3x 500s 6x 1TB etc.. matching can be a pain..
I also double back up everything.. So my 250s are mirror images of each other .. That way if one fails I've got the backup. Probably a bit overdoing it, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'd hate to lose my collection.
