Music test! This is for all you music lovers out there! So, I was just browsing along some forums I frequently visit and thought that this might be worth sharing. All of us listen to some music or the other. But how well do we listen to what is actually being played? Here are three tests that will measure three parameters of your hearing music. I recommend a gap of some few minutes in between two tests since they are quite taxing. Here they are:
1. The ToneDeafness test.
2. The Adaptive Pitch test
3. The Rhythm test.
My results so far are:
1. The ToneDeafness test - 77.8% Normal
2. The Adaptive Pitch test - 1.95Hz - Very good.
3. The Rhythm test - 72% - Just above the "good" category.
Hmmm.. This seems to be designed more with electronica being kept in mind.

hmm...
1: 69.4% - Slightly below average
2: 3.3Hz - Not bad considering I've had 3 surgeries in the ears. My left side perception of high frequencies isn't nearly as good (70%) as my left.
3: 76% Above Average (58th percentile). I find that puzzling considering my result on the first test. Both seem to be associated to musical memory.

My results:
77.8% Correct (Normal)
3.6 Hz (Normal)
76%
Note I did this without the use of earphones. Not sure if that makes a difference. I might repeat it later to see if it makes a difference.

First one - Tone deaf - 83.3% - 79th percentile
Second one - Adaptive Pitch - 8.4 Hz (Yeah I suck at this >_<; but it said I was still normal.. albeit on the low side) - 5th percentile (yeah.. I reallly suck)
Third one - Rhythmn Test - 84% (84th percetile as well)
The musical visual was 75% the irony being that apparently my pitch was highest in this one and worst was visual something or another (choosing the right picture for the right sound). And I didn't see anything about percentile in this one.. or I closed the window too quickly.
Not bad I think, all things considered. If only my real grades were like this T_T

Tone Deaf - 77.8% Normal
Adaptive Pitch - 1.05Hz Very Good (I have to say that I have a rather good sound setup in my comp so that helps a lot with this one)
Rhythm - 88% Outstanding (I accidentally closed the window after completing the test so I didn't catch the verbal conclusion. I wanted that too so the second score I got was 96%)
Visual - 85% Excellent
I've always liked music very much so guess all that listening has taught me something lol
Interesting tests, thanks for posting them.

15 years of music does that to someone. Had I not gotten into Computer Science I would've been a music major.

The fact that I study music dosen't seem to make the score that much higher, but then again I have some background noise here at the dormitory. Paper walls. >.>

I did it with my regular laptop speakers. I wonder if headphones/earphones would have made a difference. I would like to give the test again, but I reckon giving the same test twice would be cheating!
@FH
Which is rather surprising. At least according to this article: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/08/musicianshearbetter/

if thats true maybe i should do some musical training.. i often have trouble hearing what ppl are talking on the phone or when they are talking to me face to face.. wonder if my hearing capability got decreased from years of my mom s screaming into the phone or my sis talking as loud as if she had a megaphone lol

I'm of the opinion musical training has little to do with hearing perception, or rather how well you hear. An audiometry test can determine if you're hard of hearing. I know I am a little, due to th nature of my work. But as long as I kept volumes loud enough (thus I was using headphones while doing the test) I could hear enough to get through with the test.

I believe that musical background has, at the very least, no negative effects on hearing perception. I believe it only helps you. For example the tone deafness test throws two melodies at you. You have to perceive if they are different or not. A background in music exposes you to more melodies. If you play a wind instrument, you will most likely have to learn to tune it. This helps you on the adaptive pitch test. As you commonly deal with differences of pitch within those finite ranges. The rhythmic test is a test that deals with different patterns. Playing a drum of some sort most likely will help you in this test.

You're probably right, as it might be a learning curve adjustment in taking it more than once Very interesting set of tests though - thanks for sharing them.
I remember taking a pitch type test (just a simple one, not quite as structured as this one) back in secondary school, and I remember having to wear earphones, because the woman who tested me said that you don't isolate the sound as well. I imagine that you could still isolate sounds either with or without earphones depending on how attuned to sound you are, but it would depend on the quality of equipment you're using as well.
My laptop speakers (internal) are good, so it may be quite as accurate as it would be if I were using earphones, but since the sound tends to decline as its spread, there could be an interference factor, even with the proximity you're sitting from your laptop.
Question for anyone who wants to answer it - did any of you have to use the repeats they offered through the test? I didn't and still received that score. I probably would have scored higher if I had. XD

That might be true, but in my case what the noise did was that it took my concentration away. If I had been able to concentrate my score would probably be higher. Maybe.
How is the score counted in the pitch test? I remember getting most of the tones with 3 Hz difference correctly, some 1.5 Hz and a few 0.75 and I got a score of 3.9? That's weird.
@Rosepetals
I used the repeat button several times.

Only did it for the pitch test. Not that it helped much. xD

I just found out that it's better to do the adaptive pitch test without earphones than with. It's really weird. I let my friend try it out first without earphones and he/she got average, but they (being a music major) wasn't satisfied with that and tried it again with earphones. They got a slightly worse score. I had done it with earphones the first time around and then when I tried it with background noise and the regular laptop speakers I did much better.
This is only for the adaptive pitch test, where I got 1.275 Hz. I had 2.1 the first time. It might be my computer though, because I have no idea how good my or my friend's earphones are.
