Qualification to be on top 200 anime? I've been looking at the top 200 anime list recently, and finally got around to pulling my finger out and type up this topic that's been bothering me for a while now: I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that the top 200 anime isn't really that "top". In fact, I would go as far as saying the tail end of the list is a bit of a joke. I mean look - there's lots of anime in that list that doesn't even get 7.0/10 average, which is pretty poor in my opinion. Meanwhile, anime such as Nodame Cantabile, which is
a) well known and
b) has received both critical and popular acclaim,
is no where to be seen.
I'd like to suggest 2 quick (at least, from my programming experience, this shouldn't be too much trouble) fixes to the problem.
1. Lower the minimum number of review needed to qualify. At the moment, I think the minimum qualification for an anime to be on the list is that it must have more than 40 reviews. I can see the idea behind this: it's to prevent an anime that has a single 10/10 fanboy review from shooting straight to the top of the charts, which makes sense to me. I think 40 is too high, especially since we no longer get new reviews incoming at a significant rate anymore, which would seriously handicap any new good series compared to when the site was at the height of its activity. I think 20 is a reasonable enough cut off point - it would mean that an anime must have a full page of reviews before it can be on the list, which seems fine to me. 20 reviews should be enough to normalise the effect of any extreme scoring by the occasional reviews, and should be a trustworthy enough score to be considered for the top 200.
2. Set a minimum cut off point for the average as well as the number of reviews. The implications for this modification should be clear - anime with averages of like, 6.5 should have no business being in the top 200 anime. I think the bar should be set to *at least* 7.0, maybe even higher, at 7.5 or 8 (though 8 might be a bit too much... depending on how the list turns out, maybe it can be experimented a bit until it looks sensible).
Since the two suggestions don't really clash at all, I'm hoping both of them can be taken aboard? *looks up at the powers that be hopefully*

I agree that the top 200 needs to be "re-done" as it were. In terms of traffic, as well as number of reviews, we're just not getting as many as we used to, which has led to a number of anime which, similar to nodame cantabile, are very good shows, and yet are not on that list. In fact, no anime after 2007 is even on that list, and I'm quite sure there are quite a few that should be on there.
Perhaps its time to acknowledge that the top 200, as it stands right now, with the current user-base as well as the current lack of reviews should be taken down as a feature since it's obvious that the list has lost any fluidity and has been stagnant for years now.

If someone had the time to code the main page, and we actually got supers to give us the green light, which I doubt, we could rework the list. Unfortunately, that's not the situation right now.

I concur with the Stick.
The top 200 doesn't work anymore.. Instead of just erasing all evidence of it though I think we should leave that list somewhere. Maybe just saying that these are good titles to watch or something, but to have it say these are the site favs doesn't really work anymore.

Hey guys,
I agree with this first post, especially since I am one of the only people who seems to be reviewing anime on this site anymore (lol I probs just watch too much anime!)
In all seriousness the Top 200 does sort of suck, in fact, I think Anime News Networks Top anime list is more accurate. Not sure how that would be calculated. But yeah, that definitely needs to be altered with the system.
If the site is going to stay alive and functioning at a less stagnant rate I think a site layout make over might work out well. It needs to look fresh to bring in new readers.
Hope someone sees this before I die of old age,

I agree that it should be looked at and altered to show the current Top 200, whatever anime will be on it I do not know. But, I believe it's time for a change. I know I'm new but I am all for this 100%.
