Scariest Games (plus discussion) What are the top scariest games you ever played and why do you find them so scary?
The scariest games I ever played:
Silent Hill (PS1): The reason why silent hill is scary is because there are dead guys all over the walls and you dont know why and the siren freak me the hell out in no other silent hill but homecoming and the other world appear.
Silent Hill 4 (PS2): The floating zombie like things are freaking creepy as hell and you cant get out of your room for the life of you, there is a creepy guy that follows you around a some point, and those zombie like things come out of the walls.
The Suffering (PS2):What I find scary about the suffering is the good and evil voices that talk to torque they pop out of nowhere sometimes and creep me out.
I only have 3 but im working on another which could be fatal frame but I have to play it first.

FEAR, at times. After a while, though, you start to "suspect" the horror, but it's still creepy.
Resident Evil 1, because I was 12 when I played it x_x
Eternal Darkness, because it's innovative in its use of the medium.
Saya no Uta (which is a VN, but nonetheless) because it seriously messes up your brain and is generally much creepier in its own way than the aforementioned.
I actually found the first Silent Hill pretty bearable, and didn't play the others.

I don't really find games all that scary nowadays,
but back when i was like 12, i remember Half Life 2 scared me with the "Don't go to Ravenholm" level

I wonder how old I was when I played Elvira? I wonder if anyone here is old enough to remember Elvira?

My brother always tells me one of the scariest games ever is one of the Left for Dead games. He's always watching reaction videos on youtube of people currently playing the game because people always freak out when stuff jumps out at them in the darkness.

I don't really play scary games, but there's a lot of games which have a lot of tension of what's coming next. Half-life and Soul Reaver (the cathedral anyone?) were a little scary when I first played them and that was many years ago. Obscure is the only survival horror I've played from start to finish. A lot of tension and a little scary.
@fnord
I agree that Saya no Uta messes with your brain and is creepy, but I don't think that makes it scary. It was just creepy, very creepy.

Yes, certainly. It depends on how you differentiate between creepy and scary. If you're meant to get freaked out (jumping in your seat etc.), then yes, it fares poorly. Left for Dead or Resident Evil or HL 2's Ravenholm level do much better in that regard. I used to think that was all horror had to offer, but the more I'm exposed to it, the less I like it. You just build up a tolerance after the 500th zombie has jumped you through the window or the floor collapses to drop you into a pit of mutated snakes. There's only so many ways to conventionally surprise you in survival horror. These days I prefer the more subtler forms like FEAR 1+2 or the stuff in Eternal Darkness.

fear was pretty darn scary, very good audio design.
silent hill -it just might be the first truly scary gaming experience of my life. i recently came across a clip of a tv show in which they interviewed a few japanese crewmembers and i recall the point they made about how what makes SH so scary is that you are an ordinary person in game, in a normal setting which adds to the realism and fear buildup-but most of all you the player are the one creating the fear, building it up.. because 9 out of 10 times there will be nothing around the corner, but the suspense builds as you progress. They also made a point that antiques/old objects seem to invoke a sense of mystery.
one game that truly creeped me out was max payne, when the baby was crying...

Yeah, I'm not too good with horror genre games, but I still buy plenty of them. I still have to finish off Silent Hill 2, and I haven't even started on 3 or 4 or the new wii version because I freak out easily. I bought Siren for the PS3 but I haven't completed that.
Don't even get me started on Fatal Frame 1 and 2.
I even had problems finishing off Doom 3. And there was a baby scene in that one too. Crap.

I can now add S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky to my list.
Now, it doesn't have as many "oh shit" moments as the original did, but I was just playing it just now, and it was pitch black. I mean, it was so dark, I couldn't see more than maybe 10-15 feet ahead of me with my flashlight. I had just completed what seemed to be a routine mission, which was to go to the last known whereabouts of some npc's friend and help him get to the base.
I figured this was pretty easy, since it was literally just outside the base I considered a "safe haven", so I trudge out in pitch black, the only thing paving the way for me being my flashlight attached to my forehead. I find the dude and he's dead, mauled to death, so I pick up his PDA which contained the information I needed and head back. I'm about to reach the base entrance when out of the darkness I see an image of what I thought was a man jumping around in my field of vision from out of nowhere. Only after I saw the glowing eyes I have to admit I did jump a bit and my heart did skip a beat. I hauled ass to the "safe zone" of the base and didn't even bother to look back to see if it was chasing me.
I swear I hate the mutants in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I currently play Left for Dead 2, but I wouldn't call it 'scary'.
I think maybe FEAR was the scariest game I've played? Phantasmagoria was pretty scary I suppose, but I played it when I was younger.
There is a game that gave a friend of mine nightmares, but I can't think of it right now.

I actually joined a L4D section of a clan (TAW) recently, just because I got tired of ragequitters in public games. Btw, do you want to get together on Steam to play some L4D sometime?
I have played FEAR, but that's not my definition of scary, it's just a dark game with people shooting at each other (although I haven't finished it, I'm planning on going through it on the pc soon). I played my, at the moment, scariest game with a friend of mine, and we both jumped every single time something happened. You might not agree with me that this is a scary game, but it's called Clock Tower 3 and both me and my friend think the game is great.

I bought L4D 2 before I joined the clan, but then they were complaining about how much better the first game is, so a couple of days ago I bought that too. In other words, I'm open for both.

Diablo 1 was the shit, back in the 97
Especialy the catacombs & caves, man thouse mans howling noises in the background always sent the chills down my spine.
And yeah, I guess I should mention that I do have swinged few glasses and mugs on my tablet while playing L4D1 & 2 with my arms when a hunter has jumped on me.
*edit*

That, and his signature had online roulette in it. Post has been removed.
Guess there's no harm in bringing this back from the dead (see what I did there). I just installed S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat with the complete mod, and like the previous versions, playing this with a decent headset with no lights, can induce a pretty creepy atmosphere.
I also have Amnesia installed on my PC, but I'm too much of a chicken to play more than 30 seconds of it. Every few steps I take results in my hasty quitting of the game.

Well the dead space series is just plain crazy scary, I mean that voice following you around whispering "isaac" geez and those monsters that you have to kill are just perfect for a horror game, dead space is one of the scariest games next to silent hill.
I still havent got to the play fatal frame series and I have had them for years now, I should get on that.

Diablo 1 gave me some pretty scary dreams. I played it for 4 days straight on it's release and was experiencing dementia. =/
Fatal Frame (Project Zero) is pretty damn creepy.

That being said, I heard that this is just as scary:
