Is it that sad? I've been hearing many rumors about this anime. Like it's pretty sad and the ending is a #$@$%. When does the guy find out about her being, you know, what she is? And do the minor characters play any type of roll?

The guy found out about her in the first episode, as I remember.
And minor characters played very big parts, too.
About ending... it is probably one of that seldom animes, where anime itself is much sadder than its ending. It is not because ending is merry, it is because anime itself is really very sad.

You don't have to wait for the ending to notice that this is the saddest anime ever. I recomend it to you very much if you are looking for a good sci-fi drama. I belive that chapter 7 is where it starts to get sadder than you ever imagined this would be.
Quote: in the end there seems to be lots of things that are left for interpretation(after all they never said against who where they fighting or the year they lived in), I love that kind of endings cause it depends on your imagination.

I bought volume one yesterday and I definitely agree that this is at least at the level of Grave of the Fireflies for how depressing it is, if not even sadder. Think of anyone youve ever loved, and then imagine having to watch their humanity slip away and no matter how hard they try, the fate is inevitable. If that makes you tear up thinking about it, this anime will have you bawling your eyes out.

it literally took me nearly a week to "get over" this anime if that tells you anything. This anime is not for everyone, but if you do intend on watching it then here is what I suggest:
- limit yourself to no more than three episodes per day.
- watch the anime with a friend.
....even the damn AMVs are hard to watch for this anime....

Yeah, it's pretty damn sad. Totally weird and freakish, but very sad.
In some ways I think it's like a distillation of emotions, they only try to give you an impression (of love, sadness etc. etc.) without actually fleshing anything out besides it. In a way it reminds me of an old play (not sure of the name, about three men trapped after a catastrophe) there's no rhyme or reason for the situation and events, just characters.

Not much to add here. Just have to agree it's not the happiest anime I've experienced.
And about that limiting self to three episodes per day, I kind of failed on that. I first watched a few episodes without following much what was happening, but today I decided to watch it from the beginning to the end, which is what I did (good ol' winamp tv and EATV).

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is fairly close in terms of emotions involved. However it isn't sci-fi and almost plays out like a soap opera. But unlike a soap opera, its a lot easier to get connected to the characters.

is it that sad? series similar to saikano? erm~~ how about Gunslinger Girl?
but i think it's just too similar - girl with modified body, they have to kill people blah blah.
i buy gunslinger girl after i watch saikano, hoping that the ending in g. girl isn't as depressing as saikano
(need someting to cure this wound in my heart after watching saikano)

Oh well... Gunslinger Girl is not the anime you should watch after Saikano, IMO. It needs something silly, comical, to put it short completely different. Azumanga comes to my mind first, or if you insist on battles, then FMP - Furnoffu. Or just switch the TV off, go outside, look at the Sun and say to yourself "Still good"
BTW The end of GsG is quite nice. Odd, sad, but nice, IMO.

i've just watched this series for a second time, the first time being quite a while ago so I didn't remember it too well - I have seen many many films in my time, and about 15 anime series also, and this is the most gut-wrenching thing I've seen.... ever... I don't cry at a lot, but I was crying with this. While I was watching, I re-thought life in some ways - hope you understand what I'm meaning by this...
So so strange, not only the ending, but almost throughout I was feeling so sad...
Envoking such strong emotions means Saikano is one of the best pieces of entertainment, or art, however you'd like to put it, ever made.

Is the anime really that sad?
I mean, if anyone have read the whole series of The last love song of this little planet (Saikano) like me, would actually find that the anime was a little disappointing. (For me anyway...) One could find that the manga itself actually contains alot more thoughts from Shuji, Chise's dairy entires and other reflections which is either not presented in detail or are just absent from the series. Although on the long run these information does not show much, it does however give interesting insights to their life and attitude to their own emotions.
Another problem I found in the anime was that the whole thing went too fast-paced. Compared to the manga, the anime rushes on without allowing the meaningful info to fully sink into the audiences mind. This, together with the loss of Shin Takahashi's interesting and rather rare techniques he used in the manga(due to the nature of anime), really affected the outcome of the pathos. And Chise is much cuter in the manga anyway.
One thing good about the anime though, the sound came out useful in offering something manga couldn't. This contributed quite well to the sadness in the series. ^_^

What are the endings? Are the ending the same for the manga as for the anime? i mean cuase thats one sad way to end a anime. This anime broke my heart!
Quote: It is realistic in the sense of pain, the pain and hurt that war gives. Shise and Shuji both endure sooo much while apart and together! So many loved ones die! All the friends from their town die, one by one in tragic ways! it so deppressing!!!! I feel like i have a broken heart! The ending was sweet but cruel! I couldnt believe how shuji was the last person on earth! I mean, Shise lived in him as a memory or something of the sort, but he litterally was the last person alive on the planet and seemed to live it all in his mind! The way he put his hand on shises' head in one of the scenes, when they go to just him, they show his hand touching the air. It hurt to realize that he was doomed to die alone with only living peacfully in his mind, no food or water, just nothingness!.... oh man i bawl even writing this. I just finished it 2 hrs ago! lol the OVA's didnt help!
They just showed the pain and suffering she went through that they did not show in the original series....a true tragic anime. one to haunt you If you thought Mai HiME was good , boy oh boy this one really f's you up
One of the hardest things to watch was the part when Shuji is called by Akemi's younger sister. when he gets there she is soo hurt she is dying. the hard part was when she told him how she Always loved him and yet when Chise went in for the move, she still supported her. the way Akemi died was painful, to die not being able to love someone at all is cruel.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS very sad yes it is sad Quote: this anime is very sad, it starts of a little wonky in my opinion but i kept watching it and my favourite part SPOILERS SPOILERS is wen he goes to the girls house after the earthquake and sees her lying in the bed in bandages and she reveals all that stuff (and her chest). That was a tear jerking moment and i find lots of things like that funny but for some reason i really felt depressed watching this anime. Then to make matters worse all that stuff was happening on the war zone and the guy went back to the room and BAM BAM BAM that part was in my opinion the worst thing that could even happen even compared to the very end of the anime, that was just a horrible unthinkable thing to happen-_- :'( DONT WATCH THE LAST 3 EPISODES IF YOU WANT IT TO END HAPPILY!!!!!!!!!!

hi AndrouskArmbrooster and welcome to the animenfo boards. If you want to properly mark your spoiler, you're going to have to highlight and quote your text, and then change the font color to white. This is the acceptable method around here that we use to mark spoilers. I'll do it now for your whole post since i haven't seen the series yet and going through it might ruin something for me if i decide to watch it.
