Rurouni Kenshin......Real? i just found this out yestarday:
Quote: ...Kenshin's character is based on a real person named Gensai Kawakami, who was a hitokiri ["assassin,"or "manslayer," as the series puts it] during the Meiji Restoration in 1868. This uprising ended the Tokugawa government's control of Japan and retruned power to the Emperor Meiji.
- Anime Insider
this was in the magazine and i typed it word for word. to me, this stuff sounds pretty true. i would love to here some coments about it...

No the history behind the story is that the guy dissappeared after the revolution. Rurouni Kenshin is susposed to be based on "what he might have done after the revolution." Its all fictional besides the fact that there was a guy like him during the revolution.

Easy way to guess avatars.. or rather know what they are.. Right click the avatar in ? and click properties.. You then see the name displayed, but not only that you get
http://gww.anderson.edu/~seevard/images/noir/chloe15_2.jpg
+
File Size 2586 bytes
+
Dimensions 100 x 76
So if you ever get confused by what an avatar is.. that is the first place to check..

You might seriously be.. Why do you hate it?
I think knowing more about the history would be good, but i would want a reliable source.. Cool subject matter though..

it didnt live up to my expectations and it should have been MUCH more serious
at least i can identify a couple of the reasons why I hate it
unlike .hack//sign where i think it has great sound, animation, character development, storyline, imagination but i hate it none the less for reasons i dont know
i mean ive tried on a few occasions to watch it (same with kenshin) but i just cant get into it
I think kenshin as a 18+ (age, not number of episodes) action based drama would have been 1000x better

Hakkai the deal with post whore is that it was a joke.. You do really respond and you do add to conversations.. Thats why everyone said it in a joking manner.. ^_^ I like you a lot, and i think you are an awesome person.. Being a post whore was a joke, and i called myself a post whore jokingly as well.. If you were a post whore you would have known a long time ago because people tend to despise them.. Congrats on 600 ^_^
Kenshin would have been bad ass for 18+ IMO, but damn i still just love it. Everyone has their own tastes.. like me trying to figure out if i like hikaru no go enough to finish watching it.. I'm not really THAT into it.. its just a preference thing.. It's just kinda odd i think because i loved Kenshin so much.. I think the whole bad ass with a sword thing could keep me entertained for a long long time..
As much as i hate dubbed anime and such Hakkai i agree with you that if not for Scifi channel it would have taken me longer to actually see the animes that got me all addicted..

another thing for which i must be the only preson in the word (well under 25)
it sems that i am the only person under 25 that i have seen in any forum who got into anime without the help of the tv (i made my parents rent me Warriors of the Wind (bastardization of Nausicaa) when i was 5, i mean sure sci-fi channel helped, but I was into anime long before we got sci-fi channel in my area, and cartoon network was even farther off, let alone toonami (i remember seeing ads for cartoon network about anime on fri or sat nights, but by the time i got it..........)
its not a bad thig that people got into anime from tv, it just seems that nobody got into anime on their own they just had a little help, or a lot of hel
and just to let anyone that might take offens from this DONT it wasnt meant to offend anyone

cadd- well, it didn't seem like a joke to me (well.....atleast until you called me one)
baka- well, to tell you the truth i always liked cartoons so i watched cn day-in and day-out(although everyone made fun of me ). but when they started showing anime....i could tell it was different from all that goofey shit, so started watching more aime and less of other stuff(but i still didn't know that it was anime). then finally when i went over to my cuz's house (in San-Antonio) he showed me some "real" anime and i loved it. that is when i found out what anime was. from then on i have liked anime more and more every day.
what i'm trying to get at is that tv doesnt get you into anime entirely(sp)(in some cases). i mean if no one ever mentions the word "anime" around you, how could you know what anime is. But that doesn't mean you wont eventually(sp) find out.

1. my avatar is from Ruroni Kenshin: Seisouhen (which is also referred to as Rurouni Kenshin OVA 2)
it is released here in the USA as Samurai X: Reflection
2. the real Saito was just a guy from the Megushimi (sp?) who joined the Meji government police after the revolution

I dont think that bakaman is the only person who didnt like Rurouni Kenshin as a light hearted anime. And that is probably the reason that they made the awesome OVA series.

ah, well my earlier post was a rhetorical question. Your avatar is somewhat of a spoiler Olorin. You might consider changing it.

actually i read that OVA and OAV are both correct its just a matter of the time it came out, OAV was more and 80's thing
OVA=Original Video Animation
OAV=Original Animated Video
so they both are the same thing, its just a nicer way of saying "straight to video"
but in america that normally means crappy animation, whereas in Japan its normally quit good
plus that bit about "is it an OVA or OAV was a little joke
i havent seen something called an OAV since, i think it was ah my goddess
btw i think OVA sounds better
and ill be watching it as soon as i clean out my hd a little, right now i have about 50 MB (yes MB) left on my 40 gig hd, damn hd is puny, i need a 160 gig 7200 RPM one

I also have a 20 gb drive that just sits in my case.. its a loud one and i hook it back up as a temporary storage unit when i am in dire need..

No, you're not.
Actually I think there is quite a lot of people, especially since there are a lot of areas/countries where TV doesn't show anime.
Off-topic, sorry.

We were already way off topic anyway.. Really after you discuss a thread and everyone has had their input or whatever it usually just goes off topic like we all did.. I dont think there is much wrong with going off topic just so long as you arent pulling a new thread in that direction, but thats just me ^_^

Pretty the whole Shinsengumi were real. Okita and Saitou were two of the three that were famous with the group. Some of the people in the series such as Sanosuke and Kanryu were based on Shinsengumi's most famous men.

The Meiji Restoration is a fascinating piece of history... I especially love hwo, for a time, Emperor Komei was basically fighting tooth-and-nail to prevent people from making him absolute ruler of Japan

He didn't disappear after the revolution, after the revolution the government completely changed a policy and he didn't agree so they got someone to kill him off.

I'm not suprised that he was a real person. Many of the characters were, like Sagara and Seito Hajime. All of them actually existed, and under those names, as well. I think this anime did a wonderful job of bringing Japan's rich history into the series.

Hmmm.... well, I'm really sorry I posted about this topic then. I am just now watching Ruruouni Kenshin and I thought this same topic. Generally I don't go around reviving old threads, I am just so into Kenshin right now and there are only like 12 or so threads in this section. I apologize once again for posted in this thread, I just wanted to share my thoughts and opinions.

SiRoI RyUu - Mike had valid input into this therad.. And you called him a post whore? Where as you had nothing to add to this thread except calling Mike (who is by the way an avid forum member) a post-whore..
As I said before it's fine to resurrect dead threads with valid input.. Your input on the other hand is nothing but spam.

If you are joking.. How would I have known? You dont post enough for me to know your personality, you neglected to use any sort of smileys except one that looked dissatisfied, and you didnt include any sort of acronym that would lead one to believe you were laughing or making a joke or j/k.
Of course I take it seriously.. Mike is a good standing member here that constantly offers insightful input, and he is also my friend.
I would advise that in the future you make it clear whether you are joking or not.

I'm posting this a bit later too, hope it's ok. ^^
Just to say that after watching Rurouni Kenshin and Peace Maker Kurogane I decided to dig up a bit on Japan's History and it's indeed quite interesting really... actually didn't expect otherwise. And it's always nice to know a bit of the background of the country that is making this great things called anime, especially when the series have historical settings. It helps us to understand the story better.
And just like Mike and others said those people really existed. And also I'd like to add that the Shinsengumi were quite infamous at the time. Although they were also known as the "defenders of Kyoto" they were not the official police; they were just a group of skilled swordman and assassins hired by the Tukogawa regime through one of the local lords to pose as an extra defense against the rebels and the foreigners and their reputation wasn't really good. They became famous however and probably not just because of that famous raid where they captured some of the rebel leaders but also because of their tenacy even after the war was over because even after the shogunate surrendered, many of its members still continued to fight to the death against the new regime.
But I found out that we can take a tour around the Mibu village and the Shinsengumi place, LOL. Well, If I ever visit Japan I'd sure would like to take it.

wow i had no idea they were real, i just thought they were bringing Japanese history into the show and modifying it slightly to make it suit their storyline
so if saito, sano and the shinsengumi(or shinsen patrol as i know it) were real then did they really meet and fight or was that just make up? and did sano really belong to some regiment sort of thing? and was his friend (the other remaining survivor of the regiment) a real person as well? and did a captain Sagara exist
sorry so many questions came to my head when i read this, i gotta get some answers
