Good News For Ah! My Goddess Fans (2004-06-29 10:29:25)
The new Ah! My Goddess TV series, set to air later this year, will take place after the OVA series and follow the stories laid out in the original manga series. Hiroaki Ghoda has stated in a TV interview that, should the show prove to be popular, he would like to animate the entire manga series.

Ecchi + Belldandy?!? NO NO NO!!!! Belldandy must be chaste as ever (with occassional totally non-sexual nudity, that is. ) I assume they'll have the same seiryuu for Belldandy?
I am usually not that crazy about harem-girl series (I watch them more for comedy than romance), but I've always loved AMG. Belldandy is my all-time favorite character design (those bangs!!!), but it's that heavenly marraige between the character and her voice actress that made the series for me.

I haven't seen OMG yet, but I want to, and this gives me more incentive to do so, as I'll need to see the OVA to keep up with the series, I would think. Thanks for the heads up, this will be next on my "to rent" list.

The OVA is from 1990 or so (and I understand it deviates a bit from the manga anyway), so it's likely they'll just start from the beginning.
The show's really, really sweet. Belldandy's devotion could be cloying but the voice actress just nails the part so, so well. She IS love!!

I'd say, apart from Sakuraba Aoi (from Ai Yori Aoshi, which I am currently watching), Belldandy makes the perfect wife.
I loved the OVA and the movie. It was so touching and romantic. One of my all-time favourites. This upcoming series is definitely on my to-buy list. Let's hope it makes its way over here.

Ai Yori Aoshi's vibe does make me think of AMG, but that's because AMG is my model for harem-girl. I think Belldandy's just about the prettiest character design ever, beautiful wardrobe, hair, etc. But the character stands out for me because the seiyuu delivered a phenomenal performance. Many actresses can play the inherently submissive, passive, chauvinistic stereotype of the "perfectly devoted housewife." But she plays off Belldandy's devotion with such a perfect combination of motherliness and soap-diva angst, that you actually believe Belldandy's love for the guy. And so Belldandy transcends as well as defines the harem-girl love heroine. Really only maybe a few roles in all of anime where the pairing of voice actor/actress and character is absolutely indelible.
That all said, if I wanted to date somebody, it be that spunky sprite Skuld. Given, erm, 10 more years.

I agree. Belldandy is almost perfect, but the pairing of Keiichi and Belldandy seems a little awkward to me. In the sense that Keiichi is almost powerless compared to her powers as a goddess. The only redeeming point for Keiichi is his love for Belldandy. Other than that, what has he? Good motorcycling skills? Bah! In that sense, it makes Belldandy more of a mother-figure to Keiichi's "little kid", know what I mean? I feel that, Keiichi is too young and immature for Belldandy. She exhibits a sense of maturity that, to me, is like that of someone experienced and much older than Keiichi. Overall, Belldandy is almost my vision of what the perfect partner whould be, but paired with Keiichi, they make a very odd couple. Give Keiichi maybe like 10 years to grow up and mature and they'd be the perfect couple.
Skuld? Too fiesty. Even given another 10 years to grow up and mature, I doubt she'll change much.

I think that goes without saying, since this is a harem show. Ai Yori Aoshi makes a reasonable case for Kaoru -- exceptionally compassionate, not really that awkward around females (his luck with women was about to turn even if Aoi didn't show up) and perhaps an equal to Aoi when asked to perform his inherited role. But I thought Keeichi came off more appropriately in the movie, though I did like the Belldandy/Celestin pairing better, one reminisce of the scene under the tree had a particularly sexy vibe to it. In a way, I'm not sure what really keeps me such a AMG fan. I admire Belldandy, but in no way wish my partner to be like her. I think the pairing is sweet but in a really abstract sense. But, there's something about the show that always makes me smile and just lets me forget my problems. I want to live in a temple with my girlfriend!!

Quirky, hyper, and a little violent. What's not to love?

Lol, reading the posts here, im probably the only one here that doesn't like AMG.
i agree, one of the if not the best female woredorbe ever, but i didn't like:
the characters (sorry)
the story
and those two are big and important part of an anime for me. i didn't like the way the characters acted.
on the subject of why not ecchi, well, i don't like love hina, breast looking every ten minutes, awkward siituations every eleven minutes and punches every twelve minutes, not very nice.
i enjoyed adventures of mini goddess much more than AMG, pure because this time round the characters have imporved a lot, maybe it's because of the lead male that was pissing me off, which in mini goddess didn't have a on screen appearence.

Why, I think you are.
Yeah, I can't really vouch for the story or the depth of the characters. That's what I like about the movie -- it's still funny, but not as broad, and they start to have Belldandy take on more human char. I've read, though, that she's a bit more snappy in the manga than the OVA. (i.e. what she learns his request, she's like "oh crap!")
I think, if someday, somebody could actually write an emotionally convincined harem show (where the world doesn't blow up), this will be the greatest anime show ever. EVAR!

Yes, but don't you want to see Naru's development as a character? She must be one of those late bloomers cos dang does she bloom . . .

Ah, my sentiments exactly. Sure brings back a lot of memories from my younger, wilder days.
And give me Aoi anyday please, I want to live with her in our own small studio apartment.

Freddy read the AMG manga.. And read the Love Hina manga.. Both are much better than the anime.. Which is why this is so cool because the AMG series will be based off the manga which is awesome.

All I can say is "awesome." I have been waiting for an animated series since I watched Aa! Megami-sama OVAs (the show that first introduced anime to me) and Movie.
I hope this show does not turn out ecchi, or else my image of Belldandy will completely shatter (reaction after reading manga). And as someone said above, I tend to smile after seeing Belldandy smile.

I haven't read the manga, but I wouldn't mind a little Urd ecchi.
I've read that the manga Belldandy was a wee bit more snappy than the anime Belldandy. After the success of the OVAs, then her character really, really sweetened up.

i just finished watching this series and it was pretty good. I always thought Aoi (from ai yori aoshi) was the perfect girl untill i saw Belldandy. One thing i didnt like about this series was the huge ammount of fillers and interupted romantic sceens (thanks to skuld), it got kind of boreing and frustraiting to watch after a while. I really liked the ending though, i couldnt have asked for a better ending. and as for ecchi/fan service, theres practicaly none exept for mabey one episode.

Yeah I posted in another thread, the TV version has her grown up in episode 26. Surprisingly I really liked her there compared to her usual annoying self. I thought overall though Urd was super sexy, she would be a steal. Far and away the best character in the show--every scene should have had her.
