My music, comments or criticism wanted Ok, so here goes nothing.
As some of you might have guessed if you've read my posts, I'm a self-proclaimed music producer, composer and musician. It seems I'm able to make just about anything from jazz to metal and so on, but I prefer guitar based music.
Enough rambling and let's get to the point. What do you think about my music? Comment or criticize (I think I can take it ). Some of my songs are located at my myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/mikaelri
The page itself isn't much to look at, but there are some of my better songs. They're all instrumental at the moment.
Descriptions of the songs:
Guitar Sample - I made this by first creating the guitar tracks using sampled guitars to get a clear picture of how it's going to be. Drums programmed with EZdrummer. Mostly Opeth inspired.
Incantation of Paradoxes - Industrial? Drum n' Bass? What do you call this kind of music? The main riff is from a build-in synthesizer in Logic. Drums played by a fellow musician and friend of mine. Partly inspired from the song "The Golden Servant" from the visual novel of Fate/Stay Night.
Futile Wishes - Piano only. Made for a documentary my cousin is making. Played by a fellow musician and friend of mine. Also one of the few songs where I've been the sound engineer while someone else plays.
I'll keep updating when I've uploaded more songs and want comments for those.
___
Update 1: Added 2 untitled songs. I'm just going to call them "Untitled" and "Untitled 2" for the sake of simplicity.
Untitled - Somewhat similar to Incantation of Paradoxes. Lead guitar and drums are played by two musicians from my school and bass by one of the teachers.
Untitled 2 - Something I made a while ago. Makes me think "peace of mind". Guitar and keyboard played by me. One of the few songs where I haven't used any drums. I'm considering whether I should remove the synthesizer that plays the melody or not.

I absolutely love the Guitar Sample, it sounds like a fight theme for an RPG.
Incantation of Paradoxes really reminds me of Dir en grey, which is not a bad thing at all.
Futile Wishes sounds like the ending theme of an RPG.
Good stuff - sounds like what I would want in my game. :]
(I requested an add by the way, 'QBasic')

Request accepted, comment added to your page.
You're not the first one to say my music reminds of video game music.
No criticism from anyone yet? They can't be flawless...

Listened to "Futile Wishes" and the "Guitar Sample". Very nice stuff (especially considering you don't have any equipment of you own). Keep it up!
As for suggestions, one thing which I found was that the "mood"/"feel" of the guitar sample kept changing rapidly. So the song started with an "alternative" feel and then progressed to a "darkish" theme. If I am not mistaken there were 4-5 separate movements. It would be awesome if these movements could be made longer and linked with interludes. I would give the same suggestion for "Futile wishes" - the individual pieces in themselves were awesome (reminded me of Erik Satie's works like Gymnopédie) and I was left wanting for more.

I meant to comment on your pieces earlier FH, but I have to say I'm really impressed. Like most have said here, I think "Futile Wishes" is very well done - I loved it on first listen. I'd actually agree with Avalanche that if you could even extend the length of the movements, constructively speaking, I think it could be taken a lot farther. I also see the Opeth inspirations in your Guitar Sample and found it quite fitting.
"Incantation of Paradoxes" does sound industrial to me, so I think you hit on the right direction of what it could classify, though it seems to have a mix of other elements as well.

Thanks Avalanche and Rosepetals for your comments, exactly what I wanted to hear.
Truth to be told, Guitar Sample was mixed in about 3 hours, which is a very short time. It's also a demo, I wouldn't dare to call it anything else. Vocals would probably make the movements more natural and I'm hoping to find someone who's good at writing lyrics when school starts again. I would record everything in the 1 million € studio, so don't expect it to end here.
Futile wishes seems unexpectedly popular. I might add the 2nd piece, which is supposed to be in the same soundtrack.

Don't get me wrong. These songs were recorded using my schools equipment and studio. It's true though that I don't have any equipment of my own. I have a song I've been working on with my laptop which I also wanted to share, to demonstrate what you can do with just free stuff.

It is still impressive. I dont know about your school equipment, but in our school most of the stuff in the music room used to be second grade stuff on the verge of breaking down. I remember the two of the guitar strings being broken, one of the drum sets torn... well you get the picture... So I guess when you mentioned school equipment, this image leapt to my mind.

Well, my school being a music school where you can study to be a musician, sound engineer or music producer, the equipment is quite decent. I'm studying music production. All producers get their own computer, a mac with logic 7 (starts to get outdated, hope they get a newer version) and then we have our own teacher who is one of the most famous music producers in my hometown. He's participated in the eurovision song contest several times. I think I've mentioned it before, but there's also a very high quality studio in the school, that was finished last year. I was the first to record guitar in there for a full length song (they had test recorded some stuff before, but not for a full length song).
I can also get staff from the school, other students like me that is. Just about anyone can get into the school, but a lot of them are very musicaly gifted, even more than I am.
Okay I think I'm done rambling, you should get the picture now. The only thing I'm lacking when in school is enough inspiration to keep working constantly. Come to think of it, school starts in a week. I'm gonna concentrate on songs with lyrics this year, since that's clearly my weakness.

Naah, its quite interesting. And by the way, I thought when you meant school you meant 'grade school' as in 10th, 12th standard and all that.
Still, its quite interesting. Let us know when you have more stuff ready!

Guitar sample didn't impress me too much. Overall I thought it was somewhat disoriented... jumping around with no common thread. The organ didn't fit it imo, felt like I was watching the Addams Family or something.
I think by using the right parts (like the very first one) of the song and building on them it could be way better. Then again, maybe I'm the wrong person to comment since I don't dig that kinda music (Opeth and such).
Incarnation was pretty nice. However, I found the recurring contrast between the smooth and rough parts kinda awkward. The smooth parts I enjoyed a lot, they kinda reminded me of Awesome. The rougher ones I didn't fancy as much.
I have to agree with many others on Futile Wishes, I really like it! Leaves you wanting for more, feels like it's cut short. When the foundation is strong you can let the music be simple and sweet and it just works. ^_^
Maybe I was a bit harsh, but I wanted to give you some criticism as well to maybe give you new ideas if needed. Overall the songs are good. With the right target group I'm sure all of them work like a charm. Keep up the good work!

lol...futile wishes would really fit nicely into an romace/drama anime...
other than that, you should probably ask this in a music-based forum...(unless you already have ^_^;)

Too harsh? No, I don't think so. I asked for critisism and that's what I got. Your critisism wasn't anything I would completely disagree with, so it's cool.

I've been looking around for a music forum, but I haven't found any that has got me hooked. Still, if I want comments from musicians I would naturally ask my schoolmates. As I have said earlier, I study music and I'm basically surrounded by people who have some kind of connection to music. Why post here then you ask? Well, there are people who only listen to music here, but don't know how to make some themselves. Even though I say that, just by reading stuff posted by others I could well see the possibility of there being some potentially musically gifted in here, if they had taken a different path in their lives.

Ok, I'm gonna do a little update on what's going on. First of all I might upload some new stuff soon, so look forward to it. Second, I'm gonna rant about what I've been doing:
I've had two major projects this fall. The first one is a song somewhat similar to IoP. The second one is probably something like... the best song I've ever made. Lol. The thing is, it's co-production. That means I won't be uploading it anytime soon. At least not without her permission. Hopefully I will be able to share it with you, but that'll be next year if sometime.
Then there's a few minor projects. The only one worth mentioning is the orchestrated version of FW. It's still a work in progress and hopefully I will have enough time to finnish it before summer.
So that's about it. I'll probably upload something within the next few days.
TL;DR: I'm just talking nonsense, nothing important. lol
