 Hidden Badasses
examples of characters who aren't so lame as they first appeared

Basically, this question came to mind: Which characters aren't as lame as they first appeared? And why do you think so?

We're all familiar with the typical lame loser male main character who, for some unknown or fantastic reason, is extremely popular with the girls. However, there are cases where the character in question was merely pretending to be lame (a hidden badass) or took a level in badass via character development. Doesn't even have to be a main character, but I'm sure you all get the general theme.

One example I can think of is Saito from Zero no Tsukaima. Briefly. Typical average guy with a fondness for big breasts and a penchant for being bullied by his mistress. The part where he leaves
Quote:
Louise and goes to stall the Albion army all by himself
was just plain awesome. Of course, by the end of that episode, he went right back to zero.

Another example, Aono Tsukune from Rosario+Vampire. Typical loser who's arguably too dumb to live. Not so much in the anime but in the manga...

Awesomeness! And he never backslides into lameness!

Third example, Emiya Shirou from Fate/Stay Night. Guy who keeps getting himself killed and only obstructs Saber. But in the visual novel, awesomeness was when
Quote:
Shirou summons the Reality Marble and outfights Gilgamesh!
I'll never forget that part of the story.

Definitely need a spoiler alert in the title. Although you've done a good job of spoiler tagging, I still think it would be better to mention that in the title to be on the safe side.

Anywho...

Spoilers for Rurouni Kenshin:
Quote:
Well duh, Kenshin himself left lameness pretty quickly in the first few eps. I mean, it was hinted at in the 1st ep, but you weren't sure just how cool he was until he had his first fight... which I don't remember anymore. *sweatdrop*

Spoilers for Bleach:
Quote:
Kind of a retrospoiler for Urahara, because he pretends to be inept twice in the entire storyline: in the beginning, and in the turn back the pendulum arc, and you find out how awesome he is eventually either later in the series, or in the movie, Fade to Black. Kinda sucks we can't see more of him. Another one is Hirako, who pretends to get his @$$ handed to him in both late in the series (Hueco Mundo arc), and in the turn back the pendulum arc. You only find out how cool he is when he gets to fight against Arrancar from Hueco Mundo. That Grimmjow fight was seriously epic, and he looks even more epic in the manga fighting more Arrancar.

Looking at the topic, I immediately thought of Aono Tsukune, and while in the anime, he basically gets to "moderately competant" you're right, in the manga he really does get to be a badass -- and stays there (Though I haven't finished the manga just yet.)

Another Type moon character: Shiki from Tsukihime. I think the reasons for him being a badass are obvious, but he's not that lame before he reveals his abiltys imo. There are probably more but who knows when I'll remember them.
