 Amagami - General Discussion Thread

After seeing ep 5, I've come to the conclusion that I don't like this continuity reset. Viewers are being told to forget about every event which has happened up until now, but to remember past characters' quirks and personalities. I must say that I felt really weird when Haruka and Junichi were shown in the same room but didn't know each other. All that chemistry from the first 4 eps are just... Gone!

Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be possible to develop the full story in 4 short eps. I've remarked before that the end of Haruka's arc felt forced. There should've been more build up.

The only good thing I can see as a result of doing the anime this way is that there's no main girl. This is one way to please all viewers, but I feel the cost runs too high.

Anyway, we'll see if the next few arcs manage to improve on delivery.

By the way, the end of Haruka's arc? It's not obvious, but the truth is that Junichi's profession is law enforcement.

Also by the way, I'm pissed that Kaoru ripped off Haruka's line in ep 5. Imagine Haruka saying "Oshigoto otsukaresama. Ofuro ni suru? Gohan wo saki ni taberu? Soretomo... wa-ta-shi? to ka?"

It's priceless!

I personally don't have any grudges against time-reset plot lines. It gives viewers the freedom to choose whichever plot(s) they prefer rather than just stick with the very one and wait anxiously for spin-offs like alternate endings and drama CDs (which doesn't cut it). For example, Clannad and Ichigo 100% were poor experiences for me as the girls I liked fell out of favour (especially Ichigo).

But I do agree that compressing one arc into 4 episodes is unacceptable as Cranston has explained. Whether the trade-off of quality for multiple plot lines is justified? Only time will tell. But so far quality seems more dear.

I reckon it was obvious that Junichi works as either a detective or an officer of the law.

I didn't play the game so I have no idea who that line was. Some pics from the game might further prove your case =P

Haruka aka Morishima-sempai. What I meant was that in the VN, that line, which was said by Kaoru in ep5, actually belonged to Morishima-sempai. I feel that was one of her best lines. Or should I say one of her most moe lines. Besides, Kaoru's character and voice can't carry it off in the way Morishima-sempai can.

Anyway, there were a lot of good scenes/conversations which never made the anime, but having another character hijack it is unforgiveable!

I haven't seen much of Kaoru's scenes yet, but a good one occurred after Junichi had seen her panties (which was pastel-pink in colour). The next time Junichi greeted her, he said "Hey, Pastel-pink!" You can pretty much imagine what happened after that. Razz

Yea I know Haruka's full name. I just don't recall Haruka having quote that particular speech sequence in the first arc. I thought you were referring to a quote in the game.

I haven't seen ep6 yet but from the looks of the preview, Kaoru's counter to Haruka's "hisa no ura" is "zettai ryouiki".

Whoops. Guess we weren't on the same page. Let me reword what I was trying to say.

You understood correctly that I was quoting from the game. Haruka doesn't actually say that line in the anime. I'm upset that anime Kaoru stole it. Anyway, there isn't a special CG for this scene. However, if you can try imagining Haruka saying that line (given her personality, mannerism, and voice) you'd probably get what I'm trying to drive at. Otherwise, never mind it. By the way, if you have a PS2, you might try getting this game. Quite unique.

So, if one were to try to assign a stereotype to Haruka or Kaoru, which would it be? Haruka doesn't seem simple to type. "School Idol" is a given, but an atypical example as her "flightiness" isn't a normal characteristic of a school idol.

Yea I understand where you're coming from. Itou Shizuka is one of my favourite seiyus and although Haruka isn't a tsundere, she's still a very out-spoken character which scores high in my books. But the 'WoW!' is just annoying. I can never live with that.

Hmm I reckon Kaoru's case is kinda unique in the sense that she over-steps the boundaries of being an osanajimi. Unless biting people's ears is common in Japan...

Actually, the osanajimi is Rihoko. She's the one in the library obsessed with food and dieting. Junichi's only known Kaoru since middle school, whereas he's known Rihoko since kindergarten. I'm pretty sure there's a childhood promise somewhere there involving marriage. I haven't confirmed it in-game but it's stereotypical and I expect it. Rihoko is also a bit of The Ditz.

Kaoru may be a tsundere?

Of the other characters, the only one I can easily classify is Sae-chan (Shrinking Violet). She's the shy girl.

I haven't interacted in-game enough with Nanasaki Ai (1st year girl in swim club) to get a handle on her. She had a character portrait which showed an evil-looking smile (evil as in snarker), and what I've seen in anime suggested kuudere, but the little interactions I've had debunks the two impressions. In other words, I've no idea what to make of her.

As for Ayutsuji, normal Class President? Except...
My interactions with this person is also limited, but there was one scene where she was drawn with a...

"murderous" (for lack of a better word) look.
Ayutsuji's arc may prove quite interesting.

After watching ep6, I have to wonder if there are kiss fetishes in every arc?

And on an unrelated note, I made Haruka cry in the game. I feel terrible. Crying or Very sad

On a further unrelated noted, the following line from the game:

Boy: "What's your relationship with Morishima-sempai?"
Answer:
1. Sempai and kohai
2. Boyfriend and girlfriend
3. Pet and Mistress

Solid gold! Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'll consider it, although...

Amagami is a PS2 game. I think I'll borrow my mother's handphone and use the camera function to take a picture, then upload into my PC. Quality's not going to be good, but I can't think of another way to get the images. (Unless someone knows how to plug a PS2 into a PC.)

Incidentally, if you're wondering why I need to use my mother's handphone, mine is the cheapest available with no camera, no 3G, no colour screen, etc etc etc. Razz

Just saw ep9. I was confused as soon as it started because of the unfamiliar school uniform. Summer uniform? WTH? The objective of Amagami is to get a date for Christmas Eve, so why's it summer? They've ruined the theme!

Another poor adaptation element is Sae-chan. Her personality is supposed to be even more timid than this. And her speech pattern more hesitant. Although the latter is tough to put up with in the game, and would be worse if in anime.

Putting all that aside, let's see which elements made it to the anime:
1. Sae-chan picking up the wallet (although Morishima-sempai wasn't the cause in the game)
2. Seeking out Miya to help identify Sae-chan (including "deru koto deteru" roughly "the part which sticks out really sticks out" Razz )
3. Miya groping Sae-chan (witnessed actual event rather than just imagining it)
4. Sae-chan deciding to waitress at the restaurant part-time (although the conversation took place at school and did not involve Kaoru)
5. Coffee spilling (supposed to have occurred at school)
6. Piggy-back janken (supposed to have occurred on way home from school)
