In 1973, an alien species known as BETA invaded earth and the resulting conflict has brought great destruction on human civilization. The only effective weapon that humanity has against BETA is the Tactical Fighter, a humanoid mecha. However, their numbers are few to wage a global war. With the advantage of overwhelming numbers, much of Eurasia has fallen to BETA in the 30 years following their appearance, and human morale is at its lowest.

In 2001, the Japanese Empire and the United States undertake the joint Prominence Project to develop the next-generation Tactical Fighter. Amongst the pilots gathering in Alaska to take part in this project are Takamura Yui of Japan, and Yuuya Bridges of America.
