@cyber: try:
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (dark)
Berserk (now this is dark and excellant if you haven't seen it)
12 Kokuki (fantasy, historic)
Blood: The Last Vampire (dark)
unfortunately in no sci-fi anime fan at all, hate most of the sci-fi stuff.
though the new ghost in the shell: innocence looks great, had a flick through it, but don't expect to actually understand the story, at least not the first time round.
another good sci-fi is Wonderful days, a korean anime.
and on the subject of korean animes, i again recommand Oseam to EVERYONE, this anime was so touching, as mature and sometimes childish as it can be, but this anime keeps it real, just like a disney cartoon but without the cliches

The only one I didn't see suggested is Maison Ikkoku but it is a long series (96 ep) and it is more funny than romantic at the beginning. But it is the only one I really enjoyed.
@Micho:
you should tell that Gravitation is not an ordinary love story (it is a love story beetween men). It is not the same.

Hi Bardack,
I grew up watching Maison Ikkoko, although this anime might seem a bit 'old' for todays standard but it is really a gem. I am glad that it has a good ending as well.
The first episode of Chobit and Love Hina reminded me of Maison Ikkoku actually. A long lasting impression.

Does anyone know any recent anime series (1999 and onwards) with boy-boy relationships, maybe in the similar sort of way Maria-sama Ga Miteru did it (but that was with girls obviously)? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion Bardack, I've heard a lot about Maison Ikkoku, and I figure I'll sit down and watch it once I finish some of the shorter series. I've seen Kimagure Orange Road, and I"ve heard the two compared a lot, but I've never seen the former. Thanks again. <bows>

Hi rosepetals,
Although I have completed Maison Ikkoku, I have only seen part of Kimagure Orange Road and read part of the scipt. How do you find that KOR? Would you care to tell me a little more on how you feel about it?
Thanks,

Hi Caffé Macchiato
KOR is a great romantic series and was one of the first anime I ever saw. It presents itself as a coming of age story with a lot of wit and humor (mystical in a way, because the main character has ESP powers, which complicates a lot of his encounters ), but realistic and serious in terms that it depicts a complex love triangle among the three main characters.
The artwork of KOR is very similar to Maison Ikkoku, from what I've seen thus far (I was looking up MI and KOR on the search engine and on AnimeNfo, and surprised about it ). And I've heard the two compared because 1. they're lengthy series 2. the art is very similar, both adopt a classic animated feel. 3. Both have an exceptional storyline in terms of complex relationships and detailed characters; even the side characters have a lot of depth to them (and since it's a long series, it's expected).
I loved KOR, and I'd highly recommend it. I think that for me it's the opposite effect, because though I've seen KOR, I've read a limited amount about Maison Ikkoku in terms of storyline. I hope this helps, I know my opinion's not really comprehensive.

KOR is quite different from Maison Ikkoku in my opinion. Well I saw only the censored italian version a loooong time ago (15 years ago maybe) but KOR's spoiler wrote: I think it is some kind of love triangle without a solution. And i don't like when things have no a solution in the end. I don't like open endings.

KOR didn't have the type of ending you said bardack
KOR's spoiler wrote: it did have an defnite ending...in the end. which made the series so much better as a whole, but the OVA still sucked and the tv series not very impressive in itself
i recommand KOR to any hardcore romance fans, it was one THE most frustratng chapters in my anime watching history, if not the most. but like love itself, it all pays off in the end.

That's what I remember. Maybe not all the series was broadcasted. I was a kid anyway. But I didn't read the manga because I didn't like it when I was a kid (do you know if the manga is different?)
Question wrote: Is the main character at the end with one of the two girls? If not (since I know there is a movie that takes place some years after) for me is an open ending. A closed ending is Maison Ikkoku.

Keep in mind I haven't seen Maison Ikkoku yet so I'm not officially stating that they're similar series; it's just an opinion from what I've read about them on various reviews and the like. Thanks for letting me know though.
I'd recommend seeing the whole of KOR (the movies, OVA, and TV series) to get the full effect of it (though by no means are they unfullfilling standing alone). I guess it depends on your interpretation of them, but I loved the series for many reasons.

Hi xenn,
I have only watched one episode, episode 10 of that series, so I cannot comment much but I kind of get the drift of that anime which is daunting. As opposed to being violent, I feel slightly irritated at their twisted self-conflicting emotions. It makes me feel 'sedated' even.
What kind of violence were you talk about here?

Yeahhhhh, super funny series, silly, sometimes TOO vulgar but I enjoyed it. Do you remember the technique one character used to win Ping Pong matches?
I remember you watched Jungle wa itsumo hale nochi guu too.
If you liked those 2 i recommend you Sexy Commando Sugoyo. Another super silly series, maybe my silly favorite one.

I am also a romance freak , but I don't like Kimagure Orange Road..
There are too many fillers, and in the TV series the love relationship doesn't develop Ep after Ep like Maison Ikkoku. I like the ending of KOR original TV series, but I don't like other 2 endings in the 2 movies.. The first movie is too arrogant, and the animation in the second movie changed for the worse..
But well that's just me I think.. As I said, there are some series which I like very much but others hate, and there are some series which the whole world likes it but I hate.. everyone is different.

@bardack: the whole KOR saga had a definite ending, and to your question you marked a spoiler with: yes.
@charn: i do agree with you that the tv series was basically a filler series, very little went on for the most of it, just a slcie of life really.
but, the first movie, a lot of people hated (which i don't see why, i mean it is a romance series) i thought was one of the best romance episode ther ever was, easily matches any episode in KGNE. just full of action and things happening and you finally see fruit of what you have been waiting for in the tv series and the (very crappy) OVAs.
second movie fo anyone here i DON'T recommand if you are on of those people who don't tolerate dub after watching subs as the characters, as charn said changes somewhat, hell i even watched it in dub after watching all the previous KOR in subs, luckily i tolerate dubs far better than most.
still it's a very good way of tying all loose ends up for me.

I think the reason I don't like the 1st movie is because of the sudden change of personality of the hero towards a female friend of a heroine.
Anyway I think the plot of the 1st movie is very realistic. It just came down to 3 people and the resolution of their relationship..
It's a very realistic movie, I just didn't like the way the hero reacted towards the heroine's friend. It's not that the movie is bad or anything.
The second movie I think it's unnecessary. But my brother loves it. He said both movies are very good and the ending in the original TV series which I like is stupid and unrealistic.. But I thought it was very good and very romantic..
Orange Road's music is, however, extremely good for both TV and movies. Definitely one of the best music amongst animes of its times.

Here my SECOND romance raccomendation.
If I see you in my dreams OVA (Yume De Aetara OVA)
This is "already" the second romantic anime that I like. Unfortunately there are only 3 episodes, I would have liked seeing more episodes...
One good point (from my point of view) is that characters are grown up (24, 22). Another thing is that the male character, despite being totally inexperienced with women, shows his feelings to the woman he loves (different from some "idiots" I've seen in other animes). The woman is so sweeeeet and she does an adorable job.
From what I've read so far I recommend this above all to Caffe' Macchiato and Charn.
warning: there is also a TV series but it is not connected to the events of the series. Same characters but different atmosphere. The male character seems a complete idiot (I've seen 7 minutes so far). They say to me the TV series resembles Love Hina (I didn't see it and I won't).
*EDIT*: I don't like the TV SERIES of the OVA I recommend.

Thank you Bardack I will check this series out. I am waiting for a delivery of a series called Here is greenwood which is also a 6 EPs romance. But your recommendation seems to be more interesting..
I finished 4 EPs of Saikano today and I like it so far. It is very similar to KGNE.. sad but beautiful.. it's like KGNE with mecha fights.
EDIT : Bardack, I just checked this series out on a main page and the TV series have 16 EPs. I checked animenation and there are 2 DVDs.. first, the OVA which has 3 EPs (the one you recommended) The 16 EPs complete TV series has only one DVD.. Strange eh ?? From my experience I don't think Media Blasters would stuff 16 EPs in 1 DVD.. The deal seems too good to be true..
There aren't any reliable reviews up there on the main page for me to judge the series too. De Baer (the review moderator) wrote a review for OVA and he gave 8.0 for it. Unfortunate his review is in German and I don't understand German.. In the TV series there aren't any reviews I can rely on to make any decisions.. ~sigh~
If you like the story that the hero is a real loser type you should give Ghost Sweeper Mikami a try.. My brother loves that series.. it's hilarious.. The hero is a real loser and a real pervert.. The heroine is a ghost though.. and the hero's boss is a Ghostbuster called Mikami and she's the stingiest person on earth. She charges JPY 100 million - 1 billion per job. The pay must be in cash and under table (the money transferred directly to her secret bank account in Switzerland for tax evasion purposes).. then she gave the hero a salary of JPY 250 per hour and the heroine (ghost) get JPY 30 per day to be her servant, slave, secretary, and a victim to lure the ghosts out.. It's quite funny and there are lots of action too..

I hate real loser types. I read the first volume of Mikami manga some years ago and I didn't like it at all.
If I see you in my dream : if the TV series is the same as the first 7 minutes I saw, well, I don't like it because the man seems to be a complete loser like you say (in the OVA he is not a real loser type ) and the girl seems stupid (in the OVA she is not).
The TV series SEEMS to be after the OVA because at the beginning of the OVA the main characters don't know each other. But the events are not connected. There is not romantic relationship beetween the characters at the beginning of the tv series.
And The eps of the TV series are 16 but they last 7 minutes each. So they are about 5 normal eps.
I don't recommend the TV series but only the OVA.

I get it now.. so I will only get the OVA.. perhaps sometimes next year... this month I am having enough trouble with my credit card especially last week I spent so much when I was in Sydney, Australia with my work colleagues for shopping and I just bought a Christmas gift for my mother (cross stitch kits from Denmark --- really expensive !!) so I probably won't be spending any money for anything "unnecessary" anymore this year.. (but who knows ? Maybe I would.. I break my own promises about "stop spending" all the time...)

I'm looking for a good adventure type anime were it starts off with one or a few people and as they go along they find more people who join them on their quest like Inu yasha and One Piece, preferebly with some comedy and a little romance (not as an obvious romance as in fushigi yuugi but something like inu yasha or rurouni kenshin) the longer the anime the better!

The one I can come up with Darkiz is Scrapped Princess. Though it isn't exactly what you want but anyway it's somewhat alike. Some people join them and then leaves them to come back again. Other than that I was gonna say RK but obviously you've already seen that one.

@dakiz: lots and lots of anime like that such as digimon, pokemon, i would imagine naruto is like that too, basically, any long ass animes focused on action would have that.
