You get the impression that this was like a lot of OVAs of the time; a small snippet of the original manga story and like a lot of them, it sticks you right in the middle of the story and doesn't have any kind of ending. Also, as this was made the year before the TV series, itlooks like it was successful enough for the TV series to be made!
I rather enjoyed this OVA of Maze and did originally watch it before the TV series and have since rewatched it after watching the TV series! It's a lot more ecchi than the TV series and has quite a bit more nudity (plus man Maze gets his leg over for a change *lol*). There's a vague idea of the original storyline but only half of the cast of characters.
It's worth a watch, even if you just want a taster of what Maze is all about without watching 25 episodes!

Maze is one of those guilty pleasures you can't really explain. Objectively, this is probably an average-to-below average OVA. But it's fun! There's quite a bit of sexual innuendo and nudity here, but it's quite tame and not disturbing (like GreenGreen). Just give this a look. It's short and fun to watch. As for the TV series, I'm watching it now and I think it's not as good as or now. They're trying too hard to set a serious plot in when the series' backbone is humor and fun. Also so far the series has fragmented the group way too much. But we'll see. . .

Maze OVA was enjoyable but everything happened out of the blue. Like with Xtv/movie it's recommended to watch the TV series.

Now I know it is not the greatest anime ever. Some people might go so far as to hate it, but you need to take Maze for what it is a light harted comedy that is not suposed to acomplish any great feat other than being intertaining, witch I beleive it was. It definatly tickled my funney bone, and I enjoyed it greatly.

If you have a free hour, and don't have a care about pointless nudity it is definatly worth checking out. Just dont go in expecting too much.

The Maze OVA series (which isn't a series, more like a 2 part episode) came out before the original Maze series. What's confusing is that it's set in the latter 3rd of the Maze TV series, sometime after Rapier joins the team, and assumes the watcher knows at least some of what's going on in the series.

Many people are turned off by this series, as it contains many gratuitous breast shots (one such is Randy inside Maze's shirt, and they show Maze's nipple... not entirely necessary). I'm not offended by it, but it DOES raise the rating level of the show a little bit to the PG-13 level or higher.

As to the story, they could've done better. One of the running gags is a dragon which has the rest of Maze's team imprisoned, and they must answer 100 questions, which have to do with who the creators of Maze are, what date is the next episode out, etc. Gets old fast.
